Suggestions on shipping taxidermy to dfw

I am probably a year out from getting my shipment sent from Splitting Image. It will have shoulder mounts of buff, eland and oryx with a zebra rug. This is coming from South Africa. Does anyone have the "path" to get them to my house in Fort Worth? Also, Airlines and service providers/shippers would be most welcome.

Today, but could easily change tomorrow with USDA. IAH by Turkish, truck to DFW (Ft Worth). If you fly them into DFW as the first port of entry, you will have an outrageous USDA charge.

I don't see any reason why you could not do that. Although, it might be cheaper (cost of fuel and your time) just to pay for it to be trucked from IAH to your home.

I'm having some shoulder mounts shipped from RSA to my door via FedEx. I can post back on this once they get to my door.

I'm using AHG Shipping and they post at times here. They have been prompt with all questions and updates.

Currently waiting on RSA Border Management inspection and paperwork signoff.

Per shipper "From the time the consignment is collected by FedEx the transit time can take 5-10 working days for the consignment to be inspected by USFWS and delivery to your home address.'


I found that it was cheaper and faster to take this route vs using an importer here. Since mounts are finished goods they don't have to go through a USA based importer. Avoids USDA. The actual shipping cost really wasn't any more expensive and actually less because no importer fee.

Although my shoulder mounts are a zebra, a nyalla and a Rowland Ward class Impala.so smaller crates.

My last crate came ground freight from JFK to my home in Idaho. Total transit time was about a week. The cost of the domestic freight was small in the grand scheme of things. Just get it into the country the bets/cheapest way possible. After that, it can ship straight to your house. Coppersmith has been good to me…… but everyone is a lot more expensive than they used to be. At least 200%of what I was expecting.

But, if you can get it to Houston, I’d probably save the freight and just go fetch it.

My experience last year was the taxidermy shipped to DFW via Dulles (IAD), and I picked it up at Coppersmith in Dallas. Coppersmith told me had it entered in Dallas the cost would have been significantly higher. Mine flew from Namibia, so I can’t help much with RSA shippers. Good Luck!

I had a shipment from Zambia that way. It took forever as Forwarded Air did not want to carry trophies. Took a lot of work and a year of time to get Forward Air to change their policy. I tried, Coppersmith tried, the shipper tried. It took a different customs broker get them to restart carry trophies again. As long as Forward Air still ship it’s another route.

Hell if I know either... Doing this at work and have no idea where those words came from. I was distracted while dealing with someone in the office and the weird sentence posted...

With the process I followed, my inspection was thorough the USFWS and not The USDA.

I've had a couple of questions about how I was able to have my trophies shipped via FedEx.

My taxidermy was done in South Africa. After the taxidermy was completed, it was picked up by AHG Shipping, who I had previously contacted to have the trophies shipped directly to my home. They provided a quote for shipping the crate via FedEx and took care of the African and American export/import paperwork. Since the trophies are finished goods, they don't have to go through USDA. I understand they were signed off on by USFWS since it is a finished animal.

My total cost, after the taxidermy, was just over $1400 USD. This was for a 3'x3'x3.5' (rough dimensions) crate being picked up in RSA, and brought to my house in Dallas via FedEx.

I hope this helps others.

If you have your taxidermy done here in the USA, this isn't an option that you can use.
