SAA suspends operations, no funding found

South African Airways (SAA) is being put under “care and maintenance” by administrators in charge of its restructuring, meaning a complete stop of the carrier's operations.

The information was revealed in an internal notice, issued on September 29, 2020, and obtained by Reuters.

“The BRPs (administrators) have made a decision to suspend all the airline operations with immediate effect,” the notice states. According to the document, the South African flag carrier will remain in such state until there will be funding to restructure it.

The development means yet another twist in the airline's history. The restructuring plan was approved by the administrators on July 14, 2020, and two days later the South African Department of Public Enterprises said that the National Treasury committed over 1 billion rand ($59 million) to finance it. On July 21 the government , while on September 18 it reversed its decision to provide 10.5 billion rand ($650 million).

Administrator’s latest statement and the suspension of operations means that the government may have reversed its decision again.

The last time SAA was expected to cease its operations was in May 2020, but the airline did not do so, and continued to conduct flights. South Africa’s ailing carrier was given bankruptcy protection in December 2019, after 8 years of continuous losses. Previous attempts to restructure it were met with opposition from both the government and trade unions.

This Holstein cow has apparently been milked to death. The once great economy of RSA slides inexorably toward third world status. And "State Run" organizations suffer first and most. Many an enterprise has failed thru incompetence....but for SAA....the final assegai was corruption. Deep, rife corruption. And Jake The Snake Zuma was the worst leader RSA has ever had, IMO. Thanks for posting BB........FWB

Another monkey wrench in getting to RSA. Doesn't look very promising for hunters ---or outfitters.

That might be the only way, to get rid of payroll.

There is history for this, Swiss Air went broke and out of business and a “new” business, Swiss International Air, with none of the baggage of the old airline.

Airlines seem to be quite adept at losing baggage...............:A Whistle:

I am holding a voucher for SAA flights canceled in June 2020. Maybe my Visa card issuer will refund my money now?

Hi Jody,
I have been looking for ideas on the best way to display my European mounts from Africa. I came across some of your shield work and was wondering if you would be willing to make one for me? If so, please let me know the cost. I like the shield with the two spears that you built for a member years ago. Thanks.

Hi Luke. Just saw your message. I am in Dillingham, and have been since 2002. I took an elementary teaching gig here, taught here five years, and then got a job with Togiak National Wildlife Refuge as their education and outreach specialist. Recently I just got a promotion and now I'm the Visitor Services Manager. Prior to DLG I spent 6 years teaching for Lake and Pen in Nondalton.
