Environment Minister Willie Aucamp has finally published proposed export quotas for elephant, black rhino, and leopard hunting trophies, a move wildlife ranchers and hunters have been demanding for years.
The draft quotas are not yet in force and will need to go through a public participation process.
Big game hunters and guides have long wanted the department to again set export quotas for the three high-value species, arguing the local hunting industry has lost up to R2.25 billion in direct revenue in the past five years.
No export quotas for the tightly regulated species have been set since late 2021.

Industry body Wildlife Ranching South Africa puts losses at between R350 million and
R450 million a year since 2021, saying international hunters have switched to other African countries.
Animal rights groups, on the other hand, welcomed the quota pause, saying trophy hunting threatens endangered wildlife and harms SA's reputation.
The draft quotas set by Aucamp for 2026 are:
• 300 elephant tusks, derived from no more than 150 individual animals;
• 12 black rhino hunting trophies; and
• 11 leopard hunting trophies to be sourced from 11 "designated and eligible hunting zones".
These proposals are to be repeated for 2027. Members of the public have 30 days to submit their views.
