Hi all, new member here! I am planning my first African hunting safari to coincide with my oldest son's college graduation in May/June 2027. There will be 2 families consisting of my wife, my two sons (20 & 22 at time of safari), myself and another adult couple on the trip. Of the 6 of us, my oldest son, my wife, the other husband and myself will be hunting. My younger son and the other wife would like to "participate" but will not be shooting. We have been to a few DSC conventions and have spoken with many outfitters and friends who have been on safari before. It seems easy to be overwhelmed with opinions and recommendations, so I thought I may post here with some specific "wishes" and hopefully receive some more tailored responses from those with real world experience. For some background, all hunters in our group are fairly experienced and have hunted whitetail throughout the Southeast as well as western big game (Elk, Mule Deer and Pronghorn) in Wyoming, Montana and Utah. We have also hunted exotics on several high-fence ranches throughout Texas, but none of us has been to Africa on safari yet.

Wish List:
1) 10 to 12 day trip including travel with 8 hunting days (we all reside in North Florida and Delta has a direct flight from Atlanta to SA). If this duration is not appropriate or consistent with the rest of the wishes below, please suggest a shorter or longer trip.
2) Luxury/Very Nice Accommodations to include 3 rooms...2 with king beds for the two couples and 1 room with 2 beds that my sons can share.
3) No preference on fair chase or high fence but prefer to stay on a large property and not drive from preserve to preserve each day. Minimal driving on up to 2 to 3 days max would be acceptable if necessary.
4) Between my son, my wife and myself, our species list would look something like (one of each...shooter TBD): Kudu, Eland, Cape Buffalo, Sable, Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Nyala, Impala, Gemsbuck, and either Roan or Warthog. The other husband will likely take 3 to 5 of the same species.
5) Collectively, we are open to a hunting "package" or to daily rates plus trophy fees. What I am not open to, is an open-ended budget. I am targeting an all-in budget of $65,000 to $75,000 for my family (including taxidermy and shipping but excluding our airfare to/from SA). I am also not interested in shooting an animal just to complete a "package". We want true trophy animals for each species we decide to take and we will be content to refrain from taking an animal if it does not suit us. I am not interested in a "package" that requires us to settle for management or cull animals.

Questions:
1) Is my budget of $65,000 to $75,000 (including taxidermy but excluding airfare) for my family of 4 in the "ballpark"?
2) Since my family of 4 consists of 3 hunters, is it customary or acceptable to switch up the hunting parties each day? For example, I pair up with my hunting son and my wife pairs with our observing son one day and then we switch the next day? Maybe one day my two sons are paired together and my wife and I are paired together? Is this frowned upon or can it be accommodated?
3) I notice a lot of PH's get specific with allowable cartridges (mostly .30 cal & up) and forgive if I offend, but many of their opinions on cartridges seem to be stuck in the past. My wife, although very tiny, shoots her 28 Nosler very well and has a high level of confidence behind her rifle. Myself and my sons prefer to shoot either a 6.5 or 7 PRC. We are all confident with our personal guns and I have no intention of buying .30 cal rifles as we have no need for it back home. I am fine with using a guides gun for the cape buffalo portion of the hunt but we prefer to use our own rifles for the plains game. Are our preferred guns really not adequate as would seem to be suggested by some of the caliber suggestions I have read? Conventional wisdom would suggest a properly placed shot from a smaller bullet would be better than a poorly placed shot from a bigger bullet.

Thank you in advance for any outfitter recommendations that may fit my criteria and for any other suggestions along the way. Happy Hunting!

I have what you are looking for in South Africa.

Please check out Game4Africa. I’ve hunted there three times and will go again someday. They have lodging for a large group and can easily satisfy your game desires.
I have posted written reports in the hunt reports section on here and please check out the video I had made after my most recent trip-it is on YouTube under the title “Buffalo and plains game with game4africa 2025.” The written report shares the same title. Lots there to digest. Wherever you choose to go, I wish you great success and grand adventure!
They do have multiple large properties which you might appreciate as you will be able to scatter your hunters, each ina different area with their own ph-but all the properties are an easy drive. Mountain top is my favorite area!

I’d suggest rewriting your budget for hunting only. Taxidermy is a very personal thing. I don’t know if you want euro mounts at $200 each or full body Cape buffalo for $10,000. No PH or outfitter is going to have a problem with 6.5 on up. However, you need to use hunting bullets not long range target bullets. The shot placement on African game is further forward and bullet construction matters more than than North America especially under 200 yards.

Please take a look at Somerby Safaris. My wife and I hunted with them in 2024 and will return with our kids in 2027. First class operation all the way! Feel free to reach out for details on our trip!

Welcome to AH and congrats on planning a memorable graduation trip , that’s a great way to introduce the family to Africa.

Tsala Safaris is a family owned and operated company and very proud of our ratio of returning clientele that should say something about how we operate.

We’ve hosted a number of very similar multi-family groups over the years and your wish list is very workable. At Tsala Safaris in South Africa we can accommodate your group in one luxury camp with multiple rooms, and importantly all the species you mentioned can be hunted within the same property without daily travelling between areas.

If you’d like, I’d be happy to send you a detailed explanation of the area and a comprehensive quote based on your group structure and budget so you can see how it compares with what you’re planning.

Feel free to message me anytime — happy to help you make sense of the options.

Happy planning!

Best Regards

Hi Bhinson29FG

Welcome to AH!
We’ve sent you a direct message with more details — looking forward to connecting!

Welcome to AH! I highly recommend Derian Koekemoer Safaris who I have personally hunted with the past two years. They have the perfect lodge to accommodate you and your family. They are just 30 min away from Kruger National Park and can arrange a variety of non hunting excursions too.

@DE KLERK SAFARIS will be able to cater for all your needs they might just struggle with bushbuck but will be on one large property and believe me they will treat you like royalty.

Have hunted there once without my family and the next with both trips were large in memories.

Good day @Bhinson29FG

Welcome to AH you will find many reputable outfitters on here that will cater for your need.

I can guarentee you your inbox will be flooded with recommendations and proposals.

At Bos & Dal Safaris we specializes in family safaris and we can most certainly accommodate your group, from your species list only two of the animals dont naturally occure on our property, but we will be able to get them one one of our concessions about 35min away.

We are sutuated a comfortable 2hr short drive from Johannesburg airport and the day you arrive in SA is the day you sleep in the lodge.

Please look out for my message between all of those in your inbox and let me know if you would like to discuss your safari in more detail.

My personal best
Gerrit

Welcome.

In my experience after going on 3 safaris:

1. Eastern Cape offers great value for money on plains game safaris. I hunted at Blaauwkrantz with the Rudman family and shot an SCI top 100 kudu plus many others. Blaauwkrantz allows people to hunt together but I’ve never done that - it’s always been 1:1 client/PH ratio. This is 100% necessary for buff, maybe less so on PG depending on outfitter.
2. A DG buffalo hunt can include plains game, but a plains game hunt is not a buffalo hunt. I’d suggest going down to shoot plains game first then bite off a dedicated 10 day buff hunt on your second trip. A nice buff on its own is in the $14k range just for the trophy fee. A week”s PG hunt with 6-8 animals is maybe $7-8k/pp. Tips are another $1500-2k.
3. Taxidermy costs are all over the board. First couple of trips we used Splitting Image in SA and it took almost two years to receive the trophies. This last time we used Swift Dip and the trophies took 8 mos to get to our US taxidermist. Expect much higher import/shipping fees than you might think. - everyone in the chain charges a fee. I’d also have a plan for the finished taxidermy - it becomes a lot real quick if you are shooting 6-8 animals. Ball park, it’s “about” $8k just to get the trophies dip and packed then sent then imported and over to your US taxidermist - per person. Then you get to pay your US taxidermist for his work. It ain’t cheap.
4. Use a Safari-dedicated travel agent like Gracy Travel for all your flights and travel arrangements - $300-ish fee so well spent, especially if bringing your own guns.
5. I am a believer in using enough gun but every hunter needs to make the ethical choices for themselves. I have no experience with the 6.5’s or 7’s so I can’t speak to terminal performance on game but there is a reason why 300WM is considered “The Lord’s Caliber” and why many PH’s think it’s the best flat and fast plains game caliber.
6. Yes you can bring a suppressor to SA. There are any number of threads on here about this topic.

YMMV on all of these,

Good Luck.

I would agree that Ernest would be a good choice for you and your big family safari!

As a former and future client of @Bos en Dal SAFARIS I would highly recommend them. I've been hunting with them twice and plan to go again soon. My friend @Mtelksports and his family will be joining them this year.
You are definitely going to be inundated with many good safari outfitters. I'm just throwing my personal recommendation and experience out there for you to consider.

Hi there,

After 17 safaris across Africa, and having taken all the trophies on your list (mostly gold medal quality), I hope I'm well placed to offer a little friendly advice, from one hunter to another.

When you post an ad like this and you state such a high price you're willing to pay (this hunt realistically should cost many thousands less than that, even with taxidermy included), you're opening yourself up to some 'creative package pricing'. For a trophy list like that, you're better off reviewing some price lists to get a realistic idea of cost and then negotiating from there. You'll protect yourself from some of the price gouging that we all know is happening out there.

Any decent outfit should be able to accommodate all the requests you've set out, and there should be absolutely no question of taking cull animals or settling for anything below the SCI minimum. Too many get away with those tricks. Study the record book, know what sort of specimen you would be happy with, and communicate that expectation clearly to your PHs. I'm an official measurer for SCI and this is how I have always done it. It keeps it very clear, and protects you from being sold substandard trophies.

As a personal recommendation, I've written a number of reviews on this website for LJ Safaris. I've hunted with them 3 times in 13 months, and my next hunt with them is in April, for klipspringer, common reedbuck, cape mountain zebra, oribi etc. I've hunted quite a few of the species you're asking for with them, and can assure you that their prices are transparent and fair and the trophy quality is very solid. I've seen all these animals on hunts with them, and you'll get the medal-quality trophies you are after. I would have no hesitation booking with them.

But regardless of which outfitter you go with, please do consider my advice, and I'm very happy to support you via DM if you would like.

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
