2013-06-10, Rustenburg, Bos en Dal Safari's

I moved from The Netherlands to Johannesburg about two months ago. Living in SA I started reading more about hunting. I always have been fascinated about hunting but in The Netherlands this is a small community and difficult to get the licenses, very expensive etc. So I went online to see what the possibilities were. I came across a forum were someone mentioned Bos en Dal Safari's located in Rustenburg here they mentioned this was a good game farm driveable distance from joburg and a nice accomodation. THIS WAS ALL TRUE. Not exactly knowing what to expect I contacted the owner Gerrit to ask him some questions via email and later we had a nice chat on the phone to answer all my questions. So I booked a the weekend of 7,8 June. Very excited for my first hunt I bought some new clothes and rented a car. Once I was close to destination I called Gerrit and he came and picked me up at the entrance of the farm. I got a nice escort and went down some dirt roads to end up at a nice lodge were Gerrit prepared a welcomes braai (bbq) for me with lots of nice meat from the farm. Not knowing what to expect from the lodge I will have to honestly say this exceeded all my expectations: Hot water, big flat screen with DSTV, an outdoor fire place, comfortable clean beds and towels! At the fire we had a talk about the following day, I decided I wanted to go for a male impala and I was also interested in shooting a Warthog, he showed me were to hit it and told me some nice hunting stories and explained how his family started with one farm and expanded to 4 all adjacent to each other, I did not realize how much land they owned until the following day. Saturday morning at 6:00 this man was ticking on my window in full camo, a huge guy so he looked impressive. I got up and dressed and once I got to the kitchen there was a nice cup of coffee waiting for me and a small breakfast. What a service! I met our driver for the day (Gerrit's father) and we got on top of a huge 4x4 and went to the shooting range to see what I had in store and get familiar with the weapon. A nice 7mm rifle with a silencer don't recall the brand. So we did some target shooting and then we travelled into the 'bush'. Rifle ready and a spotter on the back of the 4x4. Pretty soon we spotted a warthog... too fast too shy. We spotted some kudu, ostrich, and female impala's. After driving for about two hours we spotted a huge warthog I got ready to shoot it and ..... to late. So we decided to leave the vehicle and continued walking. So it was just me and Gerrit who is a professional hunter and we walked both looking left and right. Then after about half an hour we got our eyes on a nice fully grown steenbok and about 20 minutes after that we spotted a female impala here it was difficult for me if I wanted to take the shot because since it was my first hunt I really wanted a trophy to keep and treasure for the rest of my life. I made the discission not to shoot and I thing Gerrit agreed with me. Now the time was around 12pm so we decided to take a break for lunch. So we called for a lift and after being picked up there was a large lunch waiting for us in his parents small mansion. After lunch I remembered Gerrits father asking me ironically if I was going to finally shoot something? I told him with a smile on my face 'I won't disappoint you again" followed by some laughter of Gerrits father and friends. After the long walking in the morning we decided we had done enough walking and took the car to excecute a so called 'spot and stalk'. So after about 15 minutes we spotted an impala, got out of the car and got closer to the impala. I could feel this would be the one and once we got in a good angle I took a shot. The Impala took off but never made it far after a few meters it fell down and we walked to the impala, When we arrived it was already dead and remember Gerrit saying the words 'perfect shot' I felt proud and euphoric. So I guess from now on I will be hooked for life like the rest of you here. So if someone is thinking about hunting in this region I would definely recommend 'Bos en Dal Safari's due to the hospitable owners, great accommodation, fair prices and wonderful wildlife. My trophy is being made by an acquaintance of Gerrit who is in that business. I will never forget this experience and will be returning to Gerrits farm in September!!
