Dear friends

In one month I will travel to Limpopo for my first Buffalo hunt. Being a certified AH addict I thought long and hard about where I wanted to go for this inaugural Buffalo Hunt. My hunting in Africa has been focused on the Eastern Cape region. I have enjoyed great plains games hunts and I felt I wanted to experience a Buffalo hunt.

Why hunt Buffalo. Why indeed. I don’t consider myself a thrill seeker. However, I have to challenge myself or I rapidly lose interest in life. So, committing to this hunt feels like a step or two up from what I have done to date. Also, I have learned that I get a little fatigued with a long list of animals, and I prefer to focus on a small few that are difficult to achieve. The hunt is what I really enjoy. Most importantly , a buffalo hunt just screams Africa and I feel it must be experienced. I am hoping this hunt proves to be everything I have heard as I can see myself hunting buffalo in various parts of Africa.

Where to hunt my first buffalo: I have read the stories of epic buffalo hunts in many different countries. But I have tried to be honest with myself and not overestimate my abilities. I love South Africa, so the chance to go again (this will be my forth time) is something I look forward to. But I also recognize the danger associated with this hunt and so I wanted to go with someone I know and trust. I called Marius at @KMG Hunting Safaris and booked this hunt with him. Marius is a very honourable and capable PH. I know he will do everything to ensure success on a bull I will be proud to show off. I have also found he is very good at ensuring the best possible shot is taken. We have planned to hunt some plains game after the Buffalo hunt, time permitting. After enjoying several hunts with Marius, it just felt right to call him for this one.

My oldest son is coming along as an observer this time. He may join in on the plains game portion of the trip. Marius got Sinclair on his first African animal in 2016, in fact it was the first animal taken in Africa by any of our family.

I have prepared by studying video and books on these massive creatures. Shot angles and scenarios play though my mind very regularly!

I will be using my 400 H&H. 400 grain @North Fork Bullets (softs) is the main bullet. I was asked to have a handful of solids for very particular purposes and I have loaded their cup nosed solids.

These are three shot groups at 100 yards

After these were taken I properly zeroed the rifle and she is good to go!

For the plains game I am brining my 308 Norma Mag loaded with 180 gr CEB Maximus bullets.

I will fly Ethiopian Airlines (my third time with them) through Addis. They still have the cheapest business class, which suits both my champagne tastes and my beer bottle pocket. I find business class makes a huge difference and one reaches JoBurg rested! The staff are very friendly and helpful too. Claiming the rifle in Addis is the thing of great stories, as has been reported in other threads. So far I have made my plane each time, but usually at a sprint with my shoes in hand lol

For the next month I will continue to get in as much range time as I can, shooting from sticks, various positions and off hand. A lot of dry firing with various pieces of furniture, door knobs and the like substituted for a charging Dagga Boy!

I have a pair of Courtney’s and a pair of Jim Green barefoot rangers for the feet. The barefoot rangers are a different style and I am spending a lot of time in them to make sure they are comfortable. The winter has been harsh, so a lot of treadmill walking and wearing them around the house. On cold dry days, short walks out doors, too. I have had the Courtney boots for over ten years.

Well, if you’re still with me at this point, thank you for reading this and let the countdown begin!

Sounds like you are well outfitted and well prepared with an excellent caliber in the 400 H&H. Wishing you a safe and successful hunt. I look forward to your hunt report!

FUN!! Looking forward to following along :D Cheers:

Love your choice of calibers. Enjoy

You are in good hands with Marius. My wife and I hunted with him last May for our honeymoon. It was our first trip to Africa and my wife had never hunted before. He handled the situation calmly and kept her at ease while she shot her first animals. It is a great memory. He is funny, patient and knows how to motivate when you get tired or have doubts. Can't wait to hunt with him again, hopefully very soon.

Good luck

Just curious, why March? Seems a bit early.

This is what a 400gr North Fork looks like at 2200fps after being recovered from a Buffalo. They will serve you well.
Take notes, keep us all informed.
Enjoy your adventure!

I don’t recall, honestly. I suspect it probably fit in my calendar. I am a little concerned because I think the foliage will be dense. But I am confident that Marius will know how to navigate this.

A little background - I hope this isn’t too sappy

I took up hunting after my kids were born. However, it was a journey I started as a young boy. I took them fishing at a cottage in eastern Ontario. While fishing with them I realized they did not know where food came from. I got my hunting license and they did too. We hunted pheasant and deer from tree stands. And then I found AH

What an incredible well of knowledge is here. My eyes opened to a world that I had dreamed about as a kid but did not realize was attainable. The people here taught me about calibre and reloading and Africa! Then I went.

I took my family and my parents. Was it cathartic? Well, my daughter who does not hunt but she took her honeymoon in Zambia, South Africa and Mauritius. What does that tell you?

I read about Dr Robertson and Buffalo and large bore rifles. I learned about reloading. There was some politics along the way, but never mind that ….

I hunted plains game. Wow. I did it again. I went to Africa with my wife and we toured the garden route.

I can’t tell you how life altering this journey has been.

And now Cape buffalo. The quintessential African game. I have reached a point in this journey that I dreamt about years ago. How thankful am I for the education and friendship here? I can’t thank you all enough

When I was young my neighbour was a hunter - this would have been in the 1970s. He had trophies on the wall and I remember an elephant foot stool, and mounts on the wall. His trophy room and his stories were inspiring to that young boy.

My father told me stories about hunting in India. His double rifle and the game in the thickets. Here we were in Canada, a lifetime away from such things. It seemed like something other people did.

And here I am, on the cusp of the same adventure they did 60 years ago. It seemed so distant at the time but now is what I know. What a blessing we have that we can do these things.

Thank you all. My aim will be true and my heart is with you all.

I hope you have a fantastic hunting adventure and am glad you’ll be hunting a buffalo with your .400 H&H. Looking forward to your hunt reports.

Have a grand adventure.

I wish you a welcome to "cape buffalo club"!
Good hunting!

Why not, it is certainly a bit early for a foreign hunter, but you can hunt any time of year. l will also be in the area in March.
Are you hunting there too?

I have been told to expect 30C to 40C weather! From my seat in the kitchen this month that is only a 40 to 60 degree change in temperature! Holy moly. I am going to bring electrolytes to add to my water!

My 400 is loaded with H4350 and my 308 NM is loaded with H4831. These are the line of temperature insensitive powders, so I don’t think the temperature difference should have any effect. It will be interesting to see when I zero the rifle on arrival.

Best of luck to you. Will be watching for your report.

Enjoy every minute.

Ps - We expect pictures of your shoeless sprinting.

Try LMNT electrolyte solution. As a physician, I have used all of the options out there from pedialyte/gastrolyte to various commercial options for myself, my kids, and patients. For rehydration during activity, they are the best I have used so far. I am told some costcos carry them, but I have bought mine from LMNT online. https://drinklmnt.com they are individually wrapped so very convenient for travel

I have bought some Canada Rocks electrolyte solution to try, but haven’t used it yet so cannot recommend it.

Looking forward to your hunting report.
Have fun.
I believe the difference in elevation might have more of an effect on the external ballistics than the temperature. But you can calculate it in advance if Marius told exactly where would you be hunting in Eastern Cape.

A second vote for LMNT. I have a tendency toward muscle cramps when I get dehydrated. LMNT is the best for avoiding it. In fact I start every day with one.

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
