I hunted May 1-11 with Andrew Renton and Kei River Safaris in the Eastern Cape for my 1st Eastern Cape Safari after two previous trips to Limpopo. I Left the US April 29 on Delta 200 and arrived April 30. I was to meet Andrew in East London so I stayed the night in Johannesburg at Africa Sky and they also handled my firearms permitting. It is a beautful small hotel with terrific food and great comfort after the long flight.
Flew Airlink to East London. They were a breeze to fly the rifle but you do pay $35 each way. Andrew met me at the airport and we traveled to camp to sight in and get in the field. We were hunting areas in the Stromberg Mountains as well as the Karoo and along the Indian Ocean coast near the mouth of the Great Kei River.
We stayed at the mountain lodge Maweni. It is a beautiful setting. I had a private chalet with full amenities. The lodge had a great outdoor brai and fireplace and the main lodge was a rustic mountain feel. Food was excellent. Breakfast and lunch each day and gourmet dinner each nite with delicious desert options. You will not go hungry.
The hunting was second to none. Andrew is very focused, detailed and selective as to animal quality. He will only put you on the best animal. This was my 3rd safari in South Africa and 1st in the Eastern Cape and the animal quality and PH ability is second to none. On my hunt we had two trackers as I was the only hunter in Camp. These guys were outstanding at their craft and they will skin and care for your animals proper.
I was primarily hunting spirals as I wanted eastern cape kudu, bushbuck and Nyala. My other main target was a Lechwe. I had taken southern greater kudu and limpopo bushbuck on prior hunts and wanted to improve on Nyala. I was also looking for a springbok slam as well as a few other opportunities.
If you want the best eastern cape kudu, monster nyala and bushbuck Kei River Safaris is for you. In two days at least 18 quality kudu bulls were spotted in the mountains with detailed evaluation only to not quite be up to Kei River Standards. On the second day a dandy big figure 8 was spotted and after waiting him out all day I had a 51in Eastern Cape bull on the ground.
The Lechwe her are out of this world. I truly was able to spot and stalk an animal of a lifetime with the Lechwe I took. All the plains game exceeded my expectations. The nature of the concessions has you hunting. Spot and stalk at its finest.
The coastal areas has an amazing amount of bushbuck and the biggest nyala I have seen. We saw 7 bushbuck rams and took an ancient ram over 14in. The amount of 25-27in nyala was astonishing. We spotted 3 over 28 and was able to take a big flared bull at 28.5in.
Andrew took care of everything a hunter would need on safari. I enjoyed his knowledge and hearing thought process on spots and stalks and animal judgement. Hospitality was off the charts. Very warm, friendly and welcoming where you feel like family not a customer.
