Gents -- I've been poking around online and am wondering where you source decent ebony wood and hardwood dowels? I'm going to take the plunge and add a forend tip and grip cap to a Boyd's stock. What I'm seeing available online is big enough, but it's hard to tell if I'm looking at stock photos or the actual block, etc. Any tips would be much appreciated!

Thanks y'all.

Check to see where the closest Woodcraft store is or use their online store, they usually carry ebony in a size that works for what you want. For larger purchases when I build furniture I use wood workers source. but you will have to check a hardwood supplier close to you.

Just bought a few chunks from Woodcraft. They only carry 1.5x1.5 or 2x2 stock, but it's been decent quality every time. Only gripe is the price has doubled since the last order a couple years ago.

I used to get a lot of the wood I use for knife handles and other small projects from woodcraft… but prices have gotten crazy lately…

You can still get decent deals when they put stuff on sale… typically you see ebony go 25-40% off at least once or twice a year… so I just wait for the monthly flyer now, see what’s on sale that month.. and if interested go buy stuff then…

I don't know your location but Frank Paxton lumber yards are a very good source for exotic hardwoods. I taught "shop" for 30 years and always used them for large quantity orders, but they always had small "til off" and scrap pieces in their showroom. They have several locations nationwide, can't say it they would ship UPS or FedEx but I suspect they would. I have also bought good quality small quantities for tips etc. off of ebay.

You will get good results with Titebond III clamped hard and allowed to cure for 24 hours.
Good luck an ebony tip and cap really dresses up a Boyd stock....much better than their plastic.

I have bought wood from here in time past with good results. Click on the exotic hardwoods and on page two is the ebony in 18 or 24 inch lengths of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 which is plenty for a a few for end tips.
