Solo DIY Alaska moose float hunt ‘26

Noneresidents do now have to take a class to hunt moose .I went to Alaska last year total disapointment saw very few moose no caribou and only 1 bear .Its not the same place it use to be .Its expensive to go on a drop hunt from a plane too 8500 for moose .

$8500 for a drop hunt? Absolute horse-shit fabrication. 4 plane rides for me on this expedition. $6450.00 for all four flights. 2/C206 and 2/Beaver (with or without a moose).

Is that expensive? You bet your ass it is. You know what else is expensive? $40K for a fully guided hunt.

I think what he means by drop camp is where you are not only transported but also have full camp provided by an outfitter. I did that with some buddies. That will be $8500 I'd guess because ours years ago was $6500.

Well, I took it as exactly as he detailed before. A drop hunt where the transporter deserted him after he got dropped. Anyone who’s rented gear from a transporter knows that the transporter may be late picking up a hunter, but will always at least come back for his gear.

Drop hunt to me = what I’m doing as explained and detailed in this thread, where the biggest out of pocket expense is the transporter bill.

Drop camp = what you’re thinking he’s talking about. Incidentally, drop camps vary widely depending on the unit, hunt type, plane needed for insertion and distance to insertion and extraction (if it’s a float hunt) area. I’ve seen drop camps for caribou as high as $9K I’ve seen moose drop camps go for $14K.

The better areas that have a lot of moose are through the roof. And years long waiting list.

But I guess compared to guided prices is still cheap. And if you can pack the moose a guide isn’t needed to be successful.

From what I have read in this thread there is no question in my mind that @Betterinthebush is a total pro with both the experience and the equipment needed so all he needs is the transport in and out. $6500 for the total deal 4 trips seem like a deal to me given when Philip Glass and I took a Cessna from Hare to D&Y's camp was about $6,000 split four ways between us.

lol! Great advice! I never shoot a moose in the water. Thing is.., mine always seem to fall over dead in water.

Look up drop hunts for alaska moose it says $8000 to 15000 .I asked lasr summer when I drove to Fairbanks they said $8500 .I lived in Alaska fot 12 years .There use to be 300 to 400 people with planes where I live .Last year there were only 2 planes at the airport at Delta Junction .The inspectiob fee yearly now is $30000 use to be 10000 when I was there .Airplane fuel was $12 a gallon noone could afford it .Make sure to put lots of bearspray on your tent and around your tent to keep away the bears .

If you can book the same year, that should raise red flags. Either no one wants to fly with that outfit or there are no animals where they drop you.

The best solution is a buddy with a plane. My dall ram hunt cost $120 for fuel. Between my buddy’s plane and our boats, we hunted and fished all over the state.

Drop camps are a great way to go if, like the OP, you do your research and have the skill set required not only for success, but to survive.
