I travel with my rifle in a hard case with foam cut to the rifle.

I have seen multiple members say they put their gun in a soft case, then put it in their hard case with foam removed. Some have just said foam removed, some say, middle foam removed.

In my mind there would be a lot of room for the gun to slide around in the hard case. But, maybe I am imagining it wrong.

Are you putting many other things in the gun case to keep the gun from sliding around?

For those that do this, could you post a picture of how you would have your gun case set up when you travel this way?

I put my 470 DR in a soft case, along with a scoped Mod 70 in its own case inside my Pelican 1750 with the middle foam removed. I then pack cleaning rod and acc. slings, cartridge belt, etc. around them. This has worked well for a few trips over with no damage to anything and I have my rifle slips for use on he bakkie without sacrificing space in my luggage. YMMV.
I don't have any pictures available. Sorry

In my Pelican im3300 the soft case needs to be pretty thin. The idea came from the same @Philip Glass video @Tanks posted above.

I'll also note that none of my higher quality padded cases will work. Too thick, especially the ones with a storage pocket. BTW, the brown case under the butt of the rifle case is for the bolt. A couple of spare locks are in a bag under the bottom layer of foam.

I found a soft case that is more like just a sleave with a velcro closure. It can be folded and placed about anywhere and fits the requirements of a case.

Follow up question for anyone reading this that packs this way.

Have you ever had any issue with the airlines or TSA hassling you for having so many other things in your gun case with the gun?

I had seen some rumblings on here in the last year or two of people saying they were being told they weren't allowed to have anything extra in the gun cases.

I do this with a rifle in a sturdy soft case, then inside a Tuffpak. I’ll include a jacket and other soft items, knife, shooting sticks, etc. All ammo in a separate bag with locked case of course.

No issues on trips to Canada or RSA.

No issue. However, I quit using Tuffpaks as they would remove everything, and then shove it all back in without making sure the gun case was secure.

I’ll have to find those new ones one of our fellow AH’ers mentioned that was nice and thin. My double is in a Murray Leather rifle slip that is awesome. They can’t be too thick that for sure but it’s the best way

I use this exact setup and have never flown with but have shipped all over the usa. A pelican 1750 with the Armageddon gear m2010 contract case that was made to be a perfect fit

What is the traveling double rifle case of choice these days. I have a plastic SKB and it has served me well but it has a bunch of holes in which locks can be placed. My last trip to Alaska the gate check guy said I needed to have a lock in each hole. I had some TSA cheapies but when I went to get my gun checked the guy said your good with the two paddle locks.Like everyone I want easy and secure.

United and delta website says a lock in every hole available for a lock. When I flew last October I needed 4 locks for my pelican case.

I’ve done the “cheap” version of this..

Pelican vault 800 double rifle case… with Savior tactical double rifle bag inserted inside..

The length and width of the V800 is a little bigger than the savior bag.. but the thickness of the savior bag creates a snug, no shifting fit internally…
