As for number of shots and ammo, I always shoot Federal Premium 300 gr softs and solids.

The only buffalo that ever took more than one shot was the Banteng. Absolutely the toughest bovine I had ever hunted, it packed lead and kept coming.

This one, and the buff in my avatar were taken in Rungwa, Tanzania 2018! The first shot would have done it on either of them, but I keep shooting until I KNOW they aren't getting up!

The Cape Buffalo that I shot in the Metetsi region of Zimbabwe in 2005. I was hunting with Johan Spies, using my .375 RUM and a 300 grain handloaded Barnes TSX bullet. One shot through his shoulder. He ran about 50 yards and dropped.

And an American Buffalo that I shot in Montana in 2006 with my Hawken muzzleloader shooting a 425 grain Maxi-hunter lead bullet. It was about a 50 yard shot, placed just behind his shoulder. The bull dropped, got up and ran about 20 yards, and fell dead. 500 pounds of great tasting hamburger.

Son's 42" buff taken in the last 15 min of the safari in Zim. Montana 1999/Leupold 2-6x 375 Factory Rem 270 soft point (placed very nicely between the coronas!) Lights out. It traveled 36" straight down. He wrote an article which I posted on here years back, but it was removed citing "competition" with this forum. ? (A high-end periodical most don't read vs. a free website that'll likely put it out of business!) I won't post mine as it was taken in the heart w/ a .416 (400 swift a-f) at 40 yds earlier in the trip. I did put a solid through the length of it on the walkup (it's brethren took off to a lion reserve, and it limped across a riverbed and fell over, all 4 legs in the air,) but it turns out the insurance shot really wasn't necessary.

Zimbabwe 1999 - North Dande
375 H&H - Rem. 700 Classic
1 shot 270 gr. Barnes X
4 shots 300 gr. Hornady Solids

First shot ran 50 yards stopped. Next 4 shots to anchor.
All hits to the Boiler Room. He kept getting up and I kept putting him down.

Kazuma Safari Area, Zimbabwe, 2015. Winchester M70, Remington factory load with Swift 300 grain A-frame. Shot at 25 yards, bull went another 40-50 yards, one more insurance shot through heart. Similar bull in RSA in 2004, same set up, similar results. Looking forward to trying again in 2022.

Limpopo, South Africa, January 2021. Ruger M77 African in 375 Ruger using a 300 grain Peregrine VRG3 Bushmaster (expandable flat nose mono-metal) bullet over 75 grains of H414 powder. 100-120 yard shot, went maybe 100-150 yards before piling up. Put an insurance shot in him when down, but it didn't even twitch. I'd say it was dead from the first shot.

Save Conservancy, 2019, Ruger No1 Tropical 375H&H, 300 grain Hornady DGS (I f I remember correctly). 140 metres, bad shot too far back, late in the day. Hair raising followup the next day, he hadnt gone far and war lying down, probably for the last time.

Kevin,
Is that your PH in the photo with you? If so, is his name Courtney?
John

Kevin,
I met Courtney 2019 in the Save. I was hunting with Mokore and he was doing a hunt in their concession. Really nice guy, we had a good time while he was in camp.
Courteney has become our friend Proneshooter, he pops into the office in Harare when he is in town. We are threatening to go for another group hunt with him in the Save one of these days. Being drivers to camp we get the opportunity to take them fresh veggies etc and bring out trophies for the taxidermist on the way back. In return he cooks us impala balls, delicious!

That's where my son got the above Buffalo, along the Mkwasine River.

He is a brave man, the bush along the Mkwasine is really dense. We tracked in there for an hour, then we lost the spoor and I was relieved.
