Short Barreled 9.3x62 rifle

Been watching this a bit as I'm looking for the same caliber to match up with my 9.3/74R double
So the question is has anyone of you fine gents on here any experience with the Haenel jäger 10 synthetic in this caliber as the importers in the UK have just offered me one at a CMOT price not quite the gun I was after IE Merkel helix .
but very hard to resist at the price
Cheers

22 inches would be ideal. 9.3 x 62 mm is best suited to 286gr bullets(the original load), not only due to barrel twist but that is the weight of bullet that gave it it's reputation as one of the best all-round calibers for African PG including giraffe, eland and buffalo(where legal).

If you want to shoot lighter bullets step down in caliber to the 338. There are many to choose from 338-06, 338 Sabi or any other moderate velocity one available. Or even a 30 caliber with 220 grain bullets such as the good old 30-06.
I do not disagree with you but I tend to select my bullets depending on the game I am targeting.

Well here is not practical to have too many different bullets.

You could be walking looking for an impala and bump into a huge eland bull or a lion and then you have loaded a light soft bullet for impala only.....

Here is better to load a bullet that can do all.

I dream of hunting a land such as you describe and for such you are correct. Load for the largest and nastiest and it will suffice for all the rest. Of course bullet placement is key for all.

If the 9.3x62 has one fault, its a lack of velocity as far as trajectory and killing effect..On Buffalo found the 320 gr. Woodleigh, a wonderful bullet, but needs 2350 to 2400 FPs and it pretty much takes a 26 inch barrel in most guns to do that..I like a 24 inch barrel for my hunting, if I want a carbine I use a 20 inch 375 H&H with 300 and 350 gr. bullets...

The 9.3x62 is a favorite caliber of mine, Ive used it for cape buffalo, Eland, most PG as well as deer and elk, it handles those animals as well as the 375 for the most part..I consider it a 300 yard hunting rifle...but its mainstay IMO is the 286 gr. bullet at 2650 plus a tad, For buffalo I like the 286 Barnes monolithic HP or the swift 300 gr. A Frame, or one of the 286 gr. Woodleighs PPs..

Barrel length of 20 inches IMO isn't the best choice of barrel in that caliber, but I doubt that many could actually tell any difference on game or range..

Did I miss it somewhere.... Do we know which rifle @Jayjay bought in the end?.......
Hello Everybody.

I ended up going with the tried and true, CZ550 in 30-06. I was not able to get a permission to import a rifle with a bullet diameter larger than 30 caliber.

I am supposed to be in South Africa now to go after warthog and zebra but the pandemic changed all that.

Hope everyone is safe. God Bless.

Those 300 gr. woodleighs in the .338 are awesome..I shot a couple of Cape buffalo with them and the largest elk I ever shot, I hit that elk in the right flank, that 300 gr. Woodleigh PP came out behind his ear leaving a 3 inch exit hole, I have never seen anything like that in m 70 years of hunting big game. Needless to say he only made about 3 or 4 ft. and was dead when we got to him....that's penetration is spades!!

Both buffalo were broadside shots with the 300 gr. RN Woodleigh and all but one bullet made two holes, the recovered bullet was like a fan blade and the size of a quarter fully expanded on the off side shoulder, broke the shoulder going in and clipped the off side shoulder bone and came to rest upside down on the off side skin..I give that bullet in both forms the PP or the RN an A plus rating, liked the PP best (protected point)

Mine has the 22" barrel on it and find it pretty much perfect. Thought about the 24" option, but wanted something a bit shorter for treading through bush type county. Don't know as I could get to 2650 with this barrel, probably not, but it was hitting 2400-2415 with a 285 grain Norma factory load pretty consistently, according to a gentleman's chronograph at the range. That was actually better than Norma posted for the Oryx on its site so was please with that. Hand loads I'm sure would do better, but don't how much better.
