I've always wanted a Mauser (brand) commercial M98, for no other reason it seems cool to have a M98 made by Mauser. I did own a commercial FN98 a long time ago and it was a nice rifle, but I am not very knowledgeable on commercial M98s. I always thought if it had a thumb cutout it was a reworked military action and if not it was commercial.

Can anyone help me out with the details of the rifle like this one? When did Mauser make rifles like this? It has a thumb cutout, but looks smoother and nicer than most military actions. The rifle is in .30-06. Yes I see the crack behind the tang.

Thank you all very much in advance for your time and input.

Mauser never made a rifle like this one. This rifle is built from various parts, the stock does not fit perfectly and some of the markings are done with a laser.

Sure, Mauser make new rifles, but not something like this. Someone built this rifle from various parts and he could have done without the marking MAUSER-WERKE Oberndorf on this old in poor shape military bolt action.

Yes I concur that it really looks like the text has been added afterwards using some sort of laser engraving just like you write. I was merely pointing out that Mauser indeed built civilian rifles with thumb cut outs and that they still do.

For reference for those reading the thread this is how it looks on an actual Mauser I have (at least all of those I had/have look more or less like this), ie deeper and either stamped or hand engraved rather then etched/laser engraved:

Thank you for this, I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out what this was. I would never have openly come to the logical conclusion that someone would have ground off the old markings and then laser the action as an Oberndorf.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
