Just heard from a friend in SA that a Sable was sold for $1,2 million USD at the last auction. Anyone know of this?

Nothing like the details.
My bet is someone was not reading the full story.

Brits The Annual Sable Ranch Game Auction of Fred Keely was held on 18 June.
This auction had a total turnover of R9,6 million and was hosted by Vleissentraal Bosveld with Willie Roux as auctioneer.
1.158 Million USD.

Even those prices are pretty steep. Don't see how you turn a profit on prices a high as this?

yup i put it on the thread about the very expensive buffalo. 12.2 million rand, the sable was of zambian origin and in the 51 inch region , they command the best prices. i think even matetsi sable were going for 450,000.00 rand.

Kinda thought it looked a little too high but there is a lot of interest in good blood lines for breeding purposes. In a few years breeding programs for trophy size in southern Africa will be up where the current whitetail deer programs are right now here in the US
