Constructed in 2005 on a Mauser 98 action, this rifle was designed for high-capacity reliability in the field, featuring a "drop belly" magazine that accommodates four rounds of the powerful .500 Jeffery cartridge.

Stock: Custom Turkish Walnut.

I would argue that Breeding rifles are the finest example of special purpose dangerous game bolt rifles ever built. I’ve never been able to swing the cost, if I could I’d have one. I met Ryan at a show a long time ago, standing in front of his booth with my eyes glazed over as I looked at the racks full of absolute artistry. He told me I could could handle them so I did, never felt another rifle like them before or since. They may not be an elegant “English” type set up, but when a guy figures on getting in a real gunfight with something that wants to kill you back, and a bolt rifle is your thing, there isn’t a better option. Every now and then you’ll see a Gil Van Horn rifle for sale….its uncanny but it appears that breeding is simply carrying on his tradition. Pretty sure breeding was heavily influenced by van Horn, possibly even trained under him. The only thing that isn’t my favorite about some breeding rifles is they have integral muzzle brakes. Back in the day that feature was the cats ass when shooting a big bore, today, I wouldn’t buy a fixed brake rifle. This rifle for sale here is a great set-up, no brake and the best sight configuration that was available.

MNR Custom had few Breeding rifles for sale late last year out of a collection, one of them was a 500 Jeffery on a standard Mauser Action, it was the first one to sell, it was quite fancy high-grade wood, his raised comb stock, and signature trigger, the other were a 416 Rigby and a 505 Gibbs and they all sold for mid 20's I'd guess. Seen more of Breeding's rifles for sale in the last year or so than I have ever seen before, guessing guys are just getting older and can't shoot them anymore.

In case someone comes along an has sincere interest in this rifle, I would encourage you to visit Ryan's website. If you go to projects and then click over to the bore diameter category 585-500, he has photos of many if not most of the projects he has completed. He may have photos of this rifle up there even.

I wanted to make sure folks don't think there is anything off on the rifle because its a standard M98 action length. If I called up Ryan and ordered a 404 Jeffery or 500 Jeffery today and wanted a M98 action, he would in all likelihood build if off a standard length M98 action, not the longer magnum action required for the 416/450 Rigbys, 458 Lott and 505 Gibbs. It is one of the nice things about the Jeffery if folks want a rifle that is not quite as heavy.

If I went with his more typical build and go with a GMA action, like my 505 Gibbs that he built is based around, he also would not use the larger two action sizes. For Granite Mountain Arms, the 505 Gibbs gets the largest action, their African Magnum, and they list 416 and 450 Rigby as well. Then the 416 Remington Mag and 458 Lott get the Express Magnum action which is same length, just slightly less giant bolt, and then their Standard Magnum action is used for 338 win mag, 375 H&H, up to 404 and 500 Jeffery.

So looping back, when you look at Ryan's projects page, all his Jeffery Rifles get the GMA standard action or if an actual mauser, the standard M98 action. This rifle was purpose built as it is for a reason, and the lack of a magnum length action isn't an accident, mistake or shortage of options, it was intentional and what it should be.

I love this rifle, and if not still fully afflicted with double rifle fever, I'd have sent a PM before just posting in here. I've talked and corresponded with Ryan and Toni (more Toni) a number of times over the last year, and next bolt gun I have built will likely find itself on his projects page. If they have the GMA action on hand...which can cause some additional delay if not...you are still looking at a couple years wait and around $30k if not embellished. Once you start engraving, adding gold, getting super fancy root wood....well, sky is the limit there. Think its why this rifle speaks to me, its gorgeous precision instrument, but not flashy fancy, more simplistic elegance ready to do violence when called upon.

I can vouch for @dirtroadhound. He is in my town and we met face to face when I bought his Ruger RSM 416 Rigby. Smooth and easy. I also purchased a 30-40 Krag lever gun from him after the 416.

Yes, there certainly is no need to build 404 on a magnum action. Standard length action can handle that cartridge without the longer bolt throw or extra weight. Bigger is not always better ... unless you live in Texas.
