Ruger M77, 7x57 Mauser - New Project Rifle - Info Request

I'm a 7-08 person and recently picked up a 7x57. We used the 7-08 on RSA this past summer with 140 grain TSX bullets on most animals, including a zebra. Quartering shot was almost a full passthrough. Bullet only needed about 1/4" for a full passthrough.

I'm planning to try the 156 Oryx in the 7x57 once I have some time to work on it. You should b able to get a higher velocity in the 7x57 since much load data is set at a lower pressure due to the concern of using it in the old 7mm military rifles such as the Remington rolling blocks, etc.

Keep us posted.

Don't go trying to push some bullets too fast in the 7x57....the 156grn Oryx work great in the factory loads...sable shoulder shot, bullet under skin opposite after passing through ribs as well ....

Bill, congratulations on your purchase and I hope your rifle tries as hard to please as mine! I have a M98 an old friend had made about 30 years ago and I haven't found a powder/bullet combination yet it doesn't shoot acceptably. It's worst groups (13) average 1.7" with factory, while it's best (9) average .92" with handloads. I have tried powders ranging from a quickness of IMR-3031 to H-4831 and all have worked good but, I have found Shooters World Long Rifle (rebadged Lovex SO-65) to be the best suited for me.
I have shot lightweights of 130 grains to heavyweights of 175 grains and all have done well. You have probably surmised by now that I am a 7mm Mauser fan.:D Wish you all the best!

Congratulations Bill, the 7X57 is a fantastic cartridge and the 77 Ruger is a great rifle, enjoy!

When useing 7-08 data use a chronograph and do not exceed the published velocity for your chosen powder. 7x57 chamber throats vary a lot so velocity/pressure can vary a lot.

I’ve been pretty busy for the last few weeks and it’ll be a couple more before I get to really bear down and work with the 7x57.
Thanks for all your input.

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
