Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

Its not so much a dip in price. Its that covid made everything crazy. Like everyone had covid money and bought thigks like rolexs.
Rolex only makes so many a year. So prices on gray market went insane. Like 2x-4x msrp.
And only in last year or two has the craze died down and things are returning to normal. Chrono pulse actuslly tracks watch prices like the stock market

You can look at watch brands and models. But you will see where the second hand market went ham on prices during covid and has been coming down steadily.
There are some models (Rolex and others) selling below the MSRP. All I’m saying is if something comes up that you’ve been looking for at a good price…don’t hesitate.

Chrono24 is pretty proud of their inventory. I’ve found the same watch on eBay several times for hundreds less. Not the same model, the same exact watch. Same pictures, same seller. Deals can be had, but you will need to be educated on EXACTLY what you’re looking at.

O I didnt day buy from chrono. Just their keeping tabs of gray market sales like an index fund by brand and models is interesting to see.

I bought mine new from my local dealer. To date its been in 6 house fires lol. But then i got it to use it not to look pretty.
Watches first house fire tail end of the process. (Most folks who own rolexs think its crazy to use a watch.)

@farmer_john - They are tool watches made to be used but I still understand those that rarely wear them. It’s their choice, but I’m not sure most people understand the level of abuse a top quality timepiece can withstand and still keep near perfect time.

Must drive a horse and buggy, but can use a mobile phone.

Makes perfect sense.
not only that, but we have black top-white top-yellow buggy sects. they will however ride in cars-buses-vans if offered rides and they will pay when needed.

I saw an ad the other day for Rolex watches. The company was selling $3800- 4000 Submariner dive watches "certified authentic" with papers brand new for around $400.00. I emailed them with a few questions but didn't get a response. Made me wonder.

If it's too good to be true...

Please be careful out there, especially with Rolex. They are the most copied watches around and the fakes are REALLY hard to tell from the real thing sometimes. Stay frosty.

$3800-4000 ain’t even in the ballpark let alone $400…. Chinese clones/fakes

Ya. 400 thats a fake 100%
And alot of times only way to know is have a AD crack the back open. And if it is a fake your not getting it back.

My advice either buy from an AD or very reputable dealer.
Example bucherer or a ad that does cert pre owned.

$6k-$7k now is about the cheapest you will find a decent naked sub date. And it will be an 80-90’s model with aluminum bezel.

I would invest the money on a safari and buy a timex from amazon
Exactly why I have a $30 analog, water resistant Casio that keeps excellent time. I can even change the battery every couple of years or when needed.

A safari is not a financial investment, it is a 100% financial loss.

If you buy a Rolex right, they will appreciate in value. Then if you need money, like for a safari, sell the Rolex, reinvest the principal and use the profit for the safari. That is an investment.

Even a rolex isnt an investmemt. Its like a car some cars may go up in value at some point. Most wont. Omegas rolexs ect. Are just well made mass produced watches. Its not a patek grand master chime made by hand.
I wouldnt look at a watch as an investment. Get what youd be happy putting memories in and dont worry about resale value.

Heres my thoughts in general on being dressed.
First you should be put together for the occasion but as the goal of being out together no one item should be glaringly standing out. Women have a billion accesories.
Men have class/org ring. Wedding ring watch and cologn. Maybe cufflinks if wearing a suit.
So so why not invest in ourselves.
People for better or worse will treat you differently depending on how your out together. Americans in general dont put alot of effort in pride in appearance.

And it doesnt have to be a 10k watch just whatever works for the persons budget but we should put in the effort

The word "investment" means there is risk. And I would not say a safari is a 100% loss. Allow me to explain.

People choose to put there money where they want for whatever reason they have and there is zero anyone else can do about it. Good or bad...nothing can be done. That being said, if I chose to buy four luxury watches for $40K (total) and wear them for ten years. Then after years of wear, sell them, I would likely recoup much of that money. The same could not be said about a $30 digital or analog from Amazon. I underlined "likely" because there is always a risk.

Now a safari is a different type of investment, and it still carries risk. I'm sure there are people on this site who invested a lot of money into a trip and it didn't go as planned or they ended up very disappointed. But that's the risk you take. I've chosen to go on safari and consider myself richer for the experience. Even when things go sideways or my wife and I have had to endure some type of trouble, we have come out the other side better people for having gone through it. Can I recoup any monetary value for that bad experience. Certainly not, and I wouldn't want to trade the money for the time we spent doing it. Maybe not how everyone would feel, but that's us.

Safaris and trips in general are never a 100% loss IMO. Many people I know have chose experiences over gifts for a holiday or to mark an accomplishment. Let that person remember something for the rest of their life and enjoy some time with friends & family. Of course it could be paired with a beautiful timepiece that you had engraved...if that is how you choose to spend your money. ;)

Agreed for the most part.

The key is buying the Rolex or whatever investment right. You have to know the product, prices and the market. And yes everything in life comes with risks, some good and some not so good.

Sure. But even the gray market dealers are losing their shirts. The covid mania was just that. When it comes to watches. I advise all my friends get what you want because you like it. Not because you think itl have vslue 20 years from now. Because if you actually wear it vs leaving forgotten in a safe. It loses value pretty quick..

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
