Just purchased a Sako Kodiak 375 h&h and a nightforce 2.5x10x42mm compact for it. What are my best options for bases and rings for my set up? And where do I get them?
Thanks Bryan

That's what I've been looking at as my first choice. They seem to be the best option from what I've seen.

As I understand it, they are available, special order item. IF you do a search someone here you used to work form them posted the item number. I just use the rings and bases. I have found Europtic about the cheapest when adding in shipping. Sometimes you can get a deal on Ebay.

That Sako is like my Arctos. It has wonderful open sights. Assuming you plan to use it for DG, having access to them instantly for a follow-up is really a good thing. Mine wears Talley QD's and they are available directly from Talley. http://www.talleymanufacturing.com/ I have used them on several rifles for years and they are absolutely dependable.

Sako does make QD Optilocks, however, I don't have any personal experience with them.

Even the standard Optilocks can be used in sort of "QD" fashion. A couple quick turns with an Allen wrench on the base screws and the scope slides right off for use of the iron sights. When you want it back on you just slide it back in place, tighten the base screws and the scope maintains zero. When I travel, I take an extra scope in the same mounts that is sighted in for that rifle as a spare.

There are two different versions of Optilock QD mounts.

The older (discontinued) variant detaches the base (and ring) from the rifle - pretty much as you could do with the ordinary bases (allen wrench method mentioned above). Uses the same rings as non-qd optilock.

The newer model leaves the base on the action and detaches just the rings (Leupold QR style). So far I have not seen them in real life, just a picture.
Maybe they have yet to hit the market, as there are not even pics on the Sako website (http://www.sako.fi/scope-mounts), though the QD option is mentioned in the footnotes.

The two systems are not compatible.

EDIT: I relly like the optilock concept with the polymer insert that protects the scope tube.. but a big negative aspect is the mount height. Even the Extra Low rings allow for 50+mm objectives, which is rather unnecessary if you have 1-4×24 in a 30mm tube.

Via this site a former Sako rep refereed me to Sako for QD rings, after contacting Sako I was told they were no longer available.
I have mounted Talley QD rings with outstanding service and help from them.

Ugh. One the reasons to purchase a SAKO is the Optilock Rings and Bases. Any other brand defeats the purpose.

I have the very same Sako Kodiak. I have Optilock on mine as well. They are very expensive, but they work well, and are built like a tank.

I have a Sako 85 and have had good luck with Optilocks too, though I've never had any other rings or bases on this particular rifle for comparison. I agree that they do seem to be higher than other types though. I have a 56mm objective in low rings. My only knock on them was they are (or were when I bought them) only available in gloss. I had a gunsmith matte them so they matched the scope better. Maybe petty and unnecessary, but I like how it turned out.

I did a little housekeeping in my shop and found some .500 Jeffery ammo that I no longer need. Superior Ammunition and Hendershots loaded them, along with AHR (American Hunting Rifles). Several Woodleigh/A-Square solids along with lead bullets in both 535g and 600g. Message me for any details.

Hi Bob, how's things going in Wyong?. Down your way a couple of years back but haven't been in NSW since Ebor for the fishing. just getting over some nasty storms up here in Qld, seeing the sun for the first time in a few days. I'm going to NZ in the spring and hope to clean up a few buns while there and perhaps shake the spiders out of my old .303LE (currently owned by my BIL). Cheers Brian
