Rigby Big Game cycling issues

No, not the idiot's fault. Read Rigby's response. Apparently the follower for this model is designed to jump the rail at shoulder. Dual purpose is supposed to be 1) stopping the bolt from closing on an empty chamber by bolt purposely colliding with middle follower ramp and 2) to somehow assist in loading/ejecting a large caliber cartridge.

What does that have to do with the extractor? Don’t start this again please.

I mean…even as plano Hillbillies, aren’t we likely brothers from other mothers…as RedneckHillbillies, we’re certainly brothers of at least additional familial ties. That’s why when I asked that teachin lady how to draw that family tree thing…she said “Will…just draw a damn circle.”

So not surprised if we end up named the same, even if by accident. You can only come up with so many new names before you have to try and start reusing the same but with misspellings and phonetics to try and make it somehow cutesie or creative.

My ex-sister in law tried to name her twins since such a way…but since she can’t spell to save her life (not that I’m any better) she misspelled both on their birth cert applications. So now, 14yr later, they are both named something that written just makes zero sense annunciation wise. First time greeters always guess wrong how to say it, folks who know how to say it would never guess how to say it. It’s like saying my name is Bob but it’s pronounced “Phil.”

Wanna talk about being “designed to go off the rails at the shoulder”…lol…some things you just can’t make up not fix…you just learn to deal and love it as it exists…regardless how f’d up it might be.

I did read rigby's response. I suspect that the term "bite the bolt" means ( in this case) to hit or catch the rear of the follower on the bolt face
It is supposed to poke up at the front of the rails to lift the heavy projectile of the last round, not come out, as per the photo by pcc600 which shows what the video from the OP said he got from the gun shop showed, if cycled slowly. The follower "jumping the rails" could only happen if it was rammed forward repeatedly and damaged something, hence the jamming, and what is actually meant by jamming in this case. I suspect that there is a misunderstanding in the meaning of the phrase "jumping the rail " as well as some obtuse behaviour by some who can’t/wont understand
The only way to know for sure is to have a good video of the cycling showing what is going on, or have the rifle in hand to see.

The burning question is why is it neçcessary for only the last cartridge to be assisted into the chamber with a follower that jumps above the rails? If all the other cartridges in the magazine load without that extra assistance, what makes the last cartridge so special? Doesn't make sense, on the face of it anyway.

I do not think @SFRanger7GP is the guy to lecture on either hunting or firearms. He is truly one of the most accomplished hunters I know and can do a bit of gunsmithing himself. I would quit while ahead.

Thanks for the invitation. I have done very little traveling in Europe and don't expect to expand in the future. Very much not into being a tourist, although curiously I'm a retired national park ranger and tourism was essentially my livelihood. Cities in particular I try to avoid. If Mr Newton happens to be in Montana during hunting season, perhaps he can bring along a 450 and demonstrate it's unique operation. I know a property that desperately needs prairie dogs thinned. He can bring along a shotgun and some good boots and I'll show him my favorite pheasant hunting spots. But he'll have to hurry. Sadly, this may be our last season as my little French Brittany is now fifteen and Ellie the Wünder-Lab turned eleven in March. I'll be 74 in a few months but still on cruise control set at age thirty. I'm probably too old to be starting any more pups. And that twenty-four hour drive one way gets harder every year. This may be the last roundup. Thanks again.

P.S. I would welcome a video of the 450 operating with an explanation/demonstration of the action's unique characteristics, especially the follower. It would seem something like that would be very helpful.

I heard a rumor that Cabelas purchased several rifles for resale, and this may be the reason they are discounted. However, I can’t say for certain because Cabelas/Bass Pro Shops are not presently Rigby dealers.
