The main problem, I think, is that hardly anyone practices with these heavy weapons during the year ?
Practice for the emergencies is certainly good. The "buck fever" is still an issue.

I have been re-reading (again) 'To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth' by the late Jeff Cooper. In one chapter he explains a thing he would do for weeks before going to Africa: dry fire in front of the TV. He would sit with his heavy bolt action rifle, and "shoot" every letter O that he saw on the screen: safety off, rifle to shoulder, aim, squeeze, work the bolt, aim squeeze, work the bolt....
