On Tuesday, 22 December, customs officials at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport confiscated two 10.5kg rhino horns, valued at ZAR3 million.
Officials say that the horns were found in a shipment of taxidermy that had been profiled for examination at a forwarding company.
The shipment was missing documentation, which prompted the forwarding company to contact its owner.
When they were unable to reach the owner within 24 hours, they searched the cargo. No documents were made available so the horns’ destination could not be established.
In terms of procedure, the horns were handed over to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for further investigation.
