Romania has a long history of hunting and remains a remarkable hunting destination, especially because of the wild game animals that can be found in huge forests still untouched by the human civilisation. Our country is home of a high numbers population of brown bears (Brown Bear hunting in Romania is at this time suspended), wolves, lynx, red deer, chamois, red deer, wild boars and roe deer. More than 60% of the European brown bear population lives here in Romania and we also have the biggest chamois subspecies in the world, Carpathian chamois. The red stags of our mountains are facing the wolves and the lynx every day and night and therefore are probably the most vigilant and difficult to hunt stags in the world. But Romania is not famous for the big game only. We also have a fantastic small game population and we are one of the few country with a fieldfare hunts and the only European country where you can still hunt skylarks legally.

Between World War II and the fall of the communism, big game hunting was extremely limited, and permits were granted almost entirely to the members of the Communist Party. The most famous of all was none other than Romanian former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. After the fall of Ceausescu, hunting returned to normal and was promoted, and foreign hunters also started to come. The country was open for international hunters for sportsmen. After a short paradise in the early 90’s , without a riguros management plan the population of the wild animals start to decline, especially in the accessible areas. Fortunately, the main nuclei of our wildlife remains untouched or with very little damage from the poachers. In 2011 most of our best hunting ground became private and wild life starts blooming.

In Romania minimum size of a hunting ground is 5000 hectares in flat areas, 7500 hectares in hilly areas and 10 000 hectares in the mountains. We are the country with the lowest number of fenced hunting areas in Europe, 99.9 % form our hunting grounds are open. Romania have been blessed with perfect balance between flat areas, hilly areas and mountain areas.

    Romania and his hunting traditions

In Romania, hunting is regarded as a privilege, not a right, and is surrounded by a nostalgic and romantic aura as people pursue it as a noble passion, complete with certain rituals like botez vanatoresc or tablou vanatoresc, some kind of final parade after the hunting day. Tradition dictates that in big game hunting, in respect for the game and hunt, a tablou, a final parade of the game must be created, where all game is lined up for inspection, cleaned up as much as possible, with small green branches in their mouths, in a photographic pose and by the hunting master, together with the other hunters and their guns, and photographs are taken as a memory. Our country has two hunting museums. First one is Hunting Museum of Posada in Prahova county, hosting nationally celebrated writer Mihail Sadoveanu’ s collection. More known is the August Von Spiess Museum of Hunting and Hunting Arms, in Sibiu, last one of 1600 pieces.

Brown bear hunting in Romania (Brown Bear hunting in Romania is at this time suspended)
The brown bear hunting in Romania is done over the bait in the spring and over the bait or driven in the fall. Shooting distance will range from 40 to 60 meters for bait hunts and from 5 to 80 meters for driven hunts. Bait hunt are done in the late afternoon. Driven hunts are done all day long, with 3 to 5 drives per day. Over the bait you can see from 2,3 bears per evening up to 20-30 bears depending on the area or the timing. For the driven hunts we can see around 10 to 20 bears per day. Both method don’t requires special physical condition, anybody can do it.

Usually in the blind it will be the hunter, the local ranger and our outfitter. In the brown bear driven hunting, each hunter will have another ranger with him in the post. Over the bait your outfitter will tell you the approximate size of the bears in front of you. The trophy fees usually is based on the CIC points of the skin but once in a while we offer fix price for a bear regardless of size. One of the many reasons to sign in for our newsletter. For the driven hunt, we have two categories: mature bears and big bears. Fix price trophy fees for each categories. The duration of the hunt is normally 3 hunting days and 4 nights, enough time to get your trophy.

Best periods are at the beginning of the spring season and at the end of October until the mid of November.

    Chamois hunting in Romania

Romania has the biggest chamois subspecies Rupicapra Rupicapra Carpatica and she lives only here in Romania.
    • The biggest subspecies in the world.
    • Season start from 1 of September to 31 December.
    • High success rate for chamois hunting in Romania.
    • Great trophy quality.
You can combo with brown bear, wild boar, fallow and red stag.

    Chamois hunting in Romania
Although Romania holds the biggest chamois subspecies in the world, the numbers of the animals is not that high like other smaller subspecies of chamois. Because of this fact it is vital to hunt in the areas with the most dense population of chamois. Another very important thing to mention here, thing that not all outfitters will mention, is chamois in Romania can be found in 2 different types of terrain.

    Alpine hunt
Where the hunt is conducted in the high mountains. Best destination for chamois hunting in Romania is Fagaras mountains, of course. We have here 3 hunting grounds with a total of more than 50.000 hectares, all district with his own characteristics. Particularly one area, despite the low quota, or maybe even because of that, produce every year 80% trophies between 110 and 120 CIC points.

    Subalpine area
Subalpine area, a little bit higher than trees limit and sometimes even under this limit. We have one area like this in county of Gorj, High density of chamois and good quality as well. The best record from this area is 132 CIC points.

    Chamois hunting
Shooting distance for chamois hunt is normally over 200 meters, so flat caliber rifles and range finders are mandatory. Our guides will also carry a spotting scope to judge the size of your trophy better. The hunt starts by climbing up the mountains at the first light. and ends in the afternoon. Sometimes even spend the night in the cabin in the mountains .

The hunt is most of the time physically demanding, but our guides will give your the time to rest whenever you need it. Weather and timing are very important factors in a successful hunt. Best time is between 15 October to 15 November during the rut time. Both female and male have horns, the only difference is that the female horns are a little bit thinner and the male horns are more curved. Most of our chamois hunt are very demanding but we also have every year very few spots for those who can not climb.

    Red deer hunting in Romania

Without any doubts, Romania is one of the few places in the world where you will find pure blood wild Red Stags as hundreds of years ago.
    • Hunting season is from first day of September until end of December.
    • Spot and Stalk.
    • Almost 100% success rate for red deer hunting in Romania.
    • Great trophy quality of 100% pure and wild stags.
    • You can combo with chamois hunting, fallow buck hunting, bear hunting, roe deer hunting or wild boar hunting.

    Red deer hunting in Romania
The red stags of our remote Carpathian Mountains have always been prized and Romania has produced some of the largest stags ever taken. In September the mountain valleys ring with the roaring and clashing of fighting stags. Totally wild and in their natural environment, the stags we have in Romania have bigger sizes than the ones from the Western Europe. We organise red deer hunting in Romania in two different types of terrain, flat and mountains.

In flat areas you will find stags between 6 to 9 kilos sometimes even bigger but the real bid stags are in the mountains. Shooting distance can range somewhere from 10 to over 200 meters especially in the mountains when sometimes have to shot from one mountain slope to other mountain slope. In flat areas stags are in the higher concentration and much more easy to find not to mention that requirements for physical condition are next to zero.

On the other hand, not everybody can hunt stags in the mountains. Even if it is not such difficult as chamois hunt, mountain red stag hunt is still demanding and on a scale from 0 to 5 you will need at least 3 level of fitness. For both hunts best time is during the between 17 September and 5 October. The hunt during the rut takes place in 2 episodes: one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. The weather in September is very changeable, a good equipment it is a must.

    Roe deer hunting in Romania
There are 2 major periods for roe deer hunting in Romania: May month, when the season starts and last days of July, first days of August in the middle of the rut season.

Most of outfitters from Romania, including ours, will conduct the hunting for roe buck by spot and stalk. Basically, what you do is driving around with the car inside the hunting grounds, mostly in the areas where the local rangers know the animals like it, or in the places where they spotted the animals days before your arrival. Once the buck is spot it, you will stop the car and try to stalk the animal.

We target old, mature animals over 6 years old. There two kinds of bucks that hunters are looking for, trophy bucks and abnormal bucks. The bucks starts to degenerate after a certain age and the antlers will begin to grow smaller and smaller with every year.. The hunting for roe deer is done early in the morning and late afternoon. Shooting distance is somewhere between 15 to 150 meters and sometimes even 200 meters. Every day, the hunter can shot one or 2 bucks or even 10 bucks, depending on the client wish and the hunted area, of course. Some areas have a quota of only 15 bucks but almost 30% are gold medals and some areas have 150 bucks on the quota and they only produce 1 or 2 gold medal heads.

Best periods for roe buck hunting in Romania are at the beginning of the season between 1 of May and up to 20 of May and last days of July and first week of August, during the rut time.

Most of the time, the quail hunting in Romania is combine with the doves hunt. A typical day will start very early in the morning. You will be wake up early in the morning, 45 minutes before the first light and serve a hot coffee or tea and a sandwich. After a short drive of 20 to 25 minutes we will reach to hunting grounds for quails. The hunters will walk in line.

Each team of 4 hunters for quail hunting will have 2 pointing dogs and one dog handler. Shooting those tiny little birds is not an easy task, most of the clients score an average of 3 shells per each bird killed. It is very important that once a bird is killed all hunters stop in order to retrieve the bird. The temperature is also an important factor in this hunt. The cooler the day is, the longer we hunt and obviously the dogs will work better. Around 11 o’clock we go back to the hotel to a well worth it shower and a delicious lunch. One and a half, maximum two hours of resting and we hunt again.

This time is dove time. Our outfitter will try to find you places with very high birds unless you request easy birds.over the sun flowers crops. Usually, the high birds are found near the tall barn or in the valley. Long shots between 30 to 50 meters can be experienced here. We never hunt more than 2 days in the same spot for doveS. Fieldfare hunting in Romania

There are only few countries in the world where those beautiful birds can be hunted and Romania is probably the best destination.
    • High volume shooting.
    • Season from 1 of September until last day of February.
    • Different species of thrushes in the same trip.
    • Cleaning and freezing the birds each day.
    • Veterinary certificate for taking the birds with you.

    Fieldfare hunting in Romania
We offer fieldfare hunting in Romania in 2 different districts. First area is located very close to Bucharest, at the bottom of the mountains, in a huge vineyard about 20000 hectares. Here the best results are registered in October, just after the grapes are harvested. A typical day will start very early in the morning. Before the first light, each hunter will be placed in his own blind with an electronic caller meant to lure the birds in a high tree near the blind. For best results for fieldfare hunting, the hunters should wait until the birds are landing on the trees before making the first shot. The weather is also a very important factor in a successful hunt. Cold days are much better than warm days.

As I said the clients will start hunting before the first light and hunt until 1 pm when they will retire for lunch and rest. An average day bag is about 40-50 birds but sometimes 100 birds can be bagged.

Second area of fieldfare hunting is in the West of the country. Here you will hunt from December until last days of February, best time being January and February. Here the terrain is different. Hundreds of kilometers of fruits bushes attract thrushes especially during the winter in huge numbers. Same way of hunting but you young or more active hunters we can walk along those bushes and flash those birds too. We guarantee a minimum number of 30 birds per day per hunter but if the snow is present the number can triple very easy.

Here you can hunt all day long or you can try a nice duck hunt in the afternoon.

    Wild Duck hunting in Romania

Although Danube delta is now closed to duck hunting in Romania, our country still remains a spectacular destination for Waterfowlers around Europe.
    • High volume shooting.
    • Season from 1 of September until last day of February.
    • Different species of ducks in the same trip.
    • Cleaning and freezing the birds each day.
    • Veterinary certificate for taking the birds with you.

    Wild duck hunting in Romania
We offer this hunt is 2 different districts for wild duck hunting in Romania. First area is located on the Olt river and it is a classical duck hunt. A typical day will start very early in the morning. Before the first light every 2 hunters will be transported in the middle of the river with our motor boats inside the blinds. Near each blind, a significant number of decoys will be placed. Also we try to bring the ducks closer with electronic callers, although from our experience, a classic manual duck caller used by an experienced hunter will attract the birds much better.

We hunt with groups of 4 to 6 hunters every 3 weeks in order not to disturb the ducks too much. As in most of the birds hunts, weather is a very important factor, cold and windy days are better than warm and nice days. We hunt in the morning and in the late afternoon. During the rest of the day you can rest in the lodge or you can hunt pheasants over the pointing dogs at no extra costs. For those arriving without guns, our companies provides our semi automatic italian shotguns. The shells are also Italian made with 12 and 20 gauge depending on your preference.

Second area, located in West of Romania has a different type of duck hunting. Here we flash the ducks from the narrow channels with shallow water all day long.

Even this is not a traditional hunt, the final parade of the killed ducks in a cold day it will make jealous all your friends. You can hunt all day long but you can also combine the duck hunt with rough shooting for pheasants and hares at no extra costs.

It is hunter choice to come back at the hotel for the lunch or have a hot delicious Romanian meal right there in the field. A decent physical shape is required for this hunt as we have to walk almost the entire day but we also have solution for older hunters.

Although we hunt completely wild birds here in Romania is no daily bag limit, the final number of the birds at the end of the day is depending only of the shooter skills and physical shape.

Another important major advantage of this hunt is that you will experience different type of birds during the same trip for no extra charge. Ducks, partridges, hares and even fieldfares can be added on you daily bag.

    Climate of Romania
The climate is temperate continental climate in transition. The average annual temperature is 11 °C (51.8 °F) in the south and middle-south and 8 °C (46.4 °F) in northeast. In Bucharest, the temperature ranges from average low −5 °C (23 °F) in January to average high 29 °C (84.2 °F) in July and August, with average temperatures of −3 °C (26.6 °F) in January and 23 °C (73.4 °F) in July and August. Rainfall, although adequate throughout the country, decreases from west to east and from mountains to plains. Some mountainous areas receive more than 1,010 mm (39.8 in) of precipitation each year. Annual precipitation averages about 635 mm (25 in) in central Transylvania.

Winters are quite cold, with average highs even in lower-lying areas being no more than 3 °C (37.4 °F) and below −15 °C (5 °F) in the highest mountains.

Species to hunt in Romania and hunting season
Main hunting season in Romania is from 15 September to 15 December for most of the species. Exceptions are the roe bucks that can be hunt between 1 of May until 15 October and wild boars that can be hunted year around.

For brown bear we use to have 2 seasons, spring season and fall season. We still hope the government will reopen the bear hunts in 2019.

Romania offers a good selection of European trophy hunts including red stag, chamois, roe buck, wild boar, fallow buck and hopefully brown bear. As bird hunting we can hunt quail, dove, wild pheasant, wild ducks, geese, woodcock and capercaillie.

    Bowhunting in Romania
Unfortunately in Romania bowhunting is not allowed!

    Traveling with firearms and ammunition
Depending from the country you come from you have quite a few airlines you can choose from, each one with his own rule and regulations. For this reason is better to have a traveling agent or at least to send us an email regarding the company you prefer.

Importation of firearms and ammunition in Romania
For hunting in Romania you are allowed to bring 2 rifles and 2 shotgun. Only 200 shells are allowed and only 100 bullets same caliber as the rifles. Black powder rifle and handgun are not allowed to be imported in Romania.

Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are allowed to be imported in Romania but not more that 3 rounds in the chamber.

In order to hunt in Romania you will need:
    1. A valid hunting license in your home country or elsewhere;
    2. Gun permit. If you are an European hunter you will need European gun passport and if you are an US hunter, will need a 4457 form filled by your local police with your name and your gun serial number and brand. If you don’t know what is a 4457 form please send us an email and we will send you some reference with our formal clients from your state that will be able to explain you better what to do it;
    3. Hunting insurance against incidents. If you don’t have it, we can made one for you here in Romania. Please note that our hunting insurance is made only to cover your stay here in Romania.
We recommend that you purchase hunt insurance after booking your hunt in case you need to cancel your trip to Romania for any reason, and to obtain the usual travel insurance benefit. If you plan travel with your gun you will need a hunting invitation from our side. If you are not an European citizen we need to issue that at least 10 days before your arrival.

American citizens do not require a VISA to travel to Romania, nor most of European citizens. If you are planning to stop over in other countries before or after the hunt it is prudent to check with the embassy/consulate for the countries you intend to visit. Romania is a very safe country and you don’t have to worry about anything. More than this one of our outfitters will be with you from the time of your arrival until departure.
