Hi all,

I have a buff hunt in the eastern cape planned for March and if I am successful on my hunt I intend to have the skull turned into a euro mount and shipped back to the UK. Having never done this before I have been trying to work out costs as best as I can, but have found this to be quite tricky!

The taxidermists I’ve contacted have been very vague about the shipping costs involved. I know they can’t give exact shipping quotes as they aren’t a shipping company! but having never done this before it would be handy to know how much roughly to expect for shipping costs for shipping one buffalo skull to the UK.

I know there can be other fees such as release fees and import fees which the shipping company can charge once the crate has arrived in the UK prior to arriving at my house. But again, I don’t really know what to expect with this and how much these might costs. I wonder if somebody could possibly give some guidance on this?

Best,
Tom

I've used First Class Trophy, located in Denmark. They will give you an exact quote with the finished euro on your doorstep. Give them a call or an email.

Tom, As a thumb suck I would say you will likely be looking at GBP 1.500/- to 1.700/-. You will have taxidermy dip & ship in SA. then crating, SA export paperwork, SA ground transport, air freight, UK airport handling / clearing, vet cert, import duty and UK ground transport. Taxidermy is not cheap!

Remember Denmark is EU and UK not therefore going via Denmark will add an extra stop in the process and extra costs. Post Brexit you cannot move trophies between the EU and UK without export papers, vet certs and all the paper work.....

.

Speak to Quest Freight who can handle the import in the UK. They will likely be able to give you the most up to date advise.
  • Quest Freight Ltd — The Hook, Unit 3, Aspen Way, Feltham, Middlesex, TW13 7AQ, UK

They know this stuff and can you ask them. Look at their website. They work worldwide. They have multiple companies in different countries. Doesn't mean it will stop in the EU.

I’m always curious why if it’s one buff skull you couldn’t put it in a bag and fly back with it - then pay for fumigation etc when you land in the uk?
I was resident in the uk for 30 odd years and emigrated to NZ.
I quite regularly bring skull mounts back into NZ with me (non cites species) and if they aren’t spotless they then confiscate them and fumigate them and then I pay a courier to collect and deliver… I might pay an excess luggage fee but that’s it.. no tax on that import either… conversely if I get the trophies shipped to me then I have to pay tax…
Ps I’ve done it with water buffalo skulls and horns…

I must admit, I have put non CITIES animals in my hold luggage which have been boiled and cleaned and flown them back from a few countries. Especially if mounted on a shield or something, who is to say you didnt buy them at a market, etc.

i just got mine in december and total cost about £1600

Then I was not far off with my 1.500 to 1.700 guesstimate :)
