First of all this is a state legislation from New York, NOT Federal.

Proposed Bill Would Ban Import, Sale Of 5 Endangered African Species In NY

April 8, 2015 3:09 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Legislation has been introduced in New York that would ban the import, possession, sale or transportation of the remains of five endangered species native to Africa.
State Sen. Tony Avella was joined Wednesday by animal rights advocates on the steps of City Hall to announce the bill, which covers elephants, leopards, lions, black rhinoceroses and white rhinoceroses.
All five species are currently facing extinction and are further threatened by illegal poaching and sport hunting, advocates said.
“We’re supposed to be the stewards of these species and shame on us if we allow them to become extinct because of sport hunting,” Sen. Avella told 1010 WINS.
A recent report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency said New York is the port of entry for much of the illegal animal trade into the country, 1010 WINS reported.
“If we can stop it here, we can send a message to the entire world that New Yorkers and New York will not tolerate this,” Avella said.
The senator added that he believes New York should lead the way in taking a stand for these endangered species.
“There’s a huge number of animal rights advocates in New York and throughout the country and the world who want to preserve these animals,” he said. “If we don’t take steps now, they will be extinct. And future generations will not know that they ever existed.”

someone needs to tell them morons ,that if they bann , them
the only place these future generations will see them is in zoos

Key word is illegal animal trade. There is nothing illegal about sport hunted animals taken legally.

Nothing that the Lunatic Lefties try to do ,surprises me anymore. The spin doctor Liberals will always try to persuade everyone that the sky is falling. They must pull scientific data out of thin air. Last time a study was done, Elephant, Lion, and Leopard are not considered endangered.

Once reason that I would never live in New York or California. Too many people that are just bat shit crazy.

The only trouble is that they want to ban zoos also.

how these dumbfounded dipchits can blame legal and regulated hunting and sports hunters is mind blowing. Not one of these politicians has the balls to come out and say who, and what countries, organizations and reasons are behind the illegal hunting.

And someone tell ahola Avella to get a clue, that hunters ARE conservationists.

First they passed the "SAFE act" and now this.....

Embarrassed to say I live in NY.

I hope this bill dies a short quick death on some back table in the legislature.

Perhaps this morons career will follow suit during the next election.

Many beautiful places in NY, and CA. Unfortunately the leadership comes from another planet.

Bluey
Once one of the five die in the Bronx Zoo they can't be replaced....
So much for conservation...

WOW, and here I was thinking our empty headed morons were in a league of their own
yours are even dumber,,,,,,thank for the enlighentment , young fella

Leave it to the lefties to screw the pooch, the antis live for moments like these - poor things!

State Sen. Tony Avella probably has a wife who is a member of PETA.

or

has a donor who gave him 5k for the election that he has to pay back. Yesterday's bill was pay back. In all likelihood the bill will die with nothing constructive happening for the donor other than a press conference. If the donor wants it to happen again, guess what, another 5k. Democracy at work.

What ever happened to those idealistic Jeffersonian thoughts I used to have in my youth..........they are quickly being replaced with the cynicism of old age.

If only the politicians would put pressure where it counts, ie on Chinese authorities..

No understanding of not only conservation but who pays for it and who pays to stop the poaching.

Given some of stuff that goes on in New York I am afraid to ask but what are the chances this thing will actually pass?

IMO, very low.

Bills are presented all the time to pay back donors/constituents and to show "I'm doing the job you want me to do". A lot of bills like this never make it out of committee or are never heard. They are just political payback.

After saying all that, when a law like this finally passes.(I am sure it will someday) It will pass first in a state like NY.

I think this is a bit strange. I am no expert on US law, so please correct me if I am wrong.

Imports into the US (as in any country I know) are controlled by a Federal Agency, and come under Federal Law, so how could a State possibly legislate what is not under their jurisdiction, or their control ?
