Pre-64 .416 Hoffman By Sterling Davenport $5750

Beautiful full custom by Sterling Davenport. Pre-64 action (1951) and a beautiful build. Sterling was a great friend of George Hoffman and used George’s personal reamers on his .416s. Classic round in a beautiful package. Rifle has purportedly only been test fired for function. Comes with 40 pieces of new properly headstamped brass and dies. Someone here was seeking dies last week and that got me thinking. I was contemplating taking it to SA in April for a hunt; however, have decided to hopefully use it to help fund part of that hunt.

Very classy rifle although I concede it is odd there is no ebony forend. 1.5-5 Leupold Vari-X iii scope with EAW detachable rings. Blackburn bottom metal. LOP is 13 7/8 and barrel is 22 1/4.

I live just outside Austin, Texas and do not desire to ship. I travel throughout the state and can bring it with me for interested parties.

He sure did. I had a knowledgeable friend tell me that Mr. Davenport put his name on roughly 65 rifles! He built more than that for Rigby apparently.

It is a special rifle, but not for everyone. I know I am greatly reducing the buyer pool by not wanting to ship. It is what it is.

The 416 Hoffman is a great cartridge. I have one based on a pre-64 express action and find it to be a great buffalo rifle. It’s pretty easy to get 2,350-2,400 with a quality 400 grain bullet. I’ve got a good load that’s 2,510 but I don’t care for the recoil so I hunt now with a load at 2,350 and find it quite pleasant to shoot. With a 400 grain Bearclaw, it’s fantastic for buffalo.

Yes sir. One can also utilize .416 Remington ammunition safely/accurately. I bought the proper head stamped brass just in case I would ever draw the overzealous inspection getting into Africa. Others told me it would not be an issue, but I know I would be that guy.

100% rebore it. The gun is too nice not to use and enjoy, and the offers you’re getting for it as a wildcat wouldn’t even cover the price of the stock work.

Hottest calibers going for magazine rifles right now: 404J/500J/505G. If any of them would feed and operate correctly, plus chamber and bore cleanup to that size, I’d go that route.
