Polished Gemsbok and Eland horns

Came across these polished loose horns in a gun shop this week. Made some bases up and 'mounted' them. Pity the horns weren't matched pairs, but I think they came up OK.

Those gemsbok horns are awesome. The elands are cool too, but I think the gemsbok take the cake.

It was interesting to see the variations in the 'grain' like pattern that came through in the 20 or so Gemsbok horns I had to choose from.

Even more so with the Eland horns - the couple I picked had more 'ornate' patterning and colours than some of the others.

Very cool. I have a project for the future I’m going to do for a horizontal linear Kudu Horn chandelier over my dining room table. My plan is to polish them.
Still haven’t figured out how to polish them the best.

For some of us here in the US, who hunt White Tail deer, here is an idea. I came up with this idea about 18 years ago, and when I told my taxidermist what I wanted to do, she looked at me like if I was a bit crazy. When the finished product was displayed at her studio, she was overwhelmed with the number of orders. Not the greatest picture, but you get the idea.

Cool find and nice mounting idea. I have a single kudu horn that was given to me years ago that I've sat on and never known what to do with it. Might give it a whirl to polish up like those.

Very cool. Do they polish the horn (outer) or the bone inner core?

@Hunter4752001 I've seen inners polished, but these ones I got are outers.

I use buffalo horn for knife handles. I use a loose cotton buffing wheel with a very fine polishing compound and they come up very nice
