Looking for a New Zealand outfitter to hunt Red Stag and Tahr in 2028. Any recommendations from people who have been there. Wife will be with me but not a hunter.

Mark Lupi is the outfitter. Great guy. I spent a lot of time with him at TTHA in January. @Goopy is in the process of booking with him for a hunt later this year. @roverandbrew I believe is planning on hunting with him sometime soon as well.. and my wife and I will be hunting with him in 2027.

Hes currently the top rated competitive long range shooter in New Zealand and is sponsored by Proof Research. Hes also a former sniper in the NZ armed forces. The guy knows guns and gear as well as anyone I know.. and hes an absolute pleasure to spend time around... Fun loving, jovial, easy going, etc...

And has some great stag on his properties..

Happy to give you his direct contact information (whatsapp) if youre interested..

I did a stag / tahr hunt on the south island. I used Peter Chamberlain, based on a couple other AH hunters using him. Nothing fancy and very reasonably priced relative to a lot of other options. I hunted during the roar and very quickly got a stag that I was very happy with. Hunting during the roar, you are a month or two early for peak tahr hunting. Also, my hunts were in two very different locations and spent almost a full day traveling (stunning scenery!). The tahr hunting was extremely physically challenging, the hardest hunt I've personally done.

If you are taking a rifle with you, there is an online permitting process with the police department, along with an online safety test.

Are you looking for free range reds or estate?
Tahr as a good foot hunt or would you want one taken with the helicopter ?
I’d look at Sambar, and rusa too whilst here.
For a good foot hunted tahr you’d struggle to look past Hardyards Hunting.
Sambar and Rusa - Chris sharpe trophy hunting

heaps of outfits to choose from. But it really depends on how long you have, how fit you are and whether you’re looking for a real Kiwi hunt or a relaxing holiday.

The closer to Christchurch the lower the elevations. Down around Queenstown higher elevations. More to do in Queenstown than Christchurch. That area might be better for the non-hunting wife.

Went with Four Seasons, Shane Johnston in 2013. I took tahr and chamois. I took my son who was 16 at the time and he shot stag and tahr. Memorable trip... at that time our guide was Jim Gibson who now has his own outfit. We hunted an hour and a half out of Christchurch.

My wife and I leave March 1st for a WTA group hunt in NZ with Exclusive Adventures New Zealand hunting stag, wapiti and doing some trout fishing. It's closer to Queenstown. Should be fun.

I can heartily endorse Shane and Jim. I'll let you know how the March trip turns out...

Aren’t they between Wanaka and Cromwell?
I’m lucky enough to live down here and commute between Invercargill, Wanaka and Queenstown for work. Beautiful countryside.
I’d always recommend people who make the trip to add on a side trip to Doubtful Sound; and do some trout fishing.
Love Wanaka, avoid Queenstown like the plague (just too touristy for me).

I spoke to Exclusive Adventures at the DSC convention in ATL. They are certainly on the short list of outfitters. Anxious to hear your report on them. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice! I am planning a couple of days of trout fishing...

Happy to put something together for.

I havent been yet but at Houston Safari Club Convention this year I booked a June 2027 hunt with Wanganui Safaris. I researched for about 3 years. Talked to them extensively each time they were in town. I know at least four different people who have been with them and they all highly recommend. Their main lodge is on the N. Island but you can also hunt tahr and chamois with them on the S. Island. We are doing that and I know a lot of people like that aspect as you get to see both islands. Let us know what you end up doing! Cheers

Check out John Scurr Adventures.

Hello Sir! Could you please give me any feedback you might have on New Zealand Safaris with Mr. Gibson? Thanks in adavance!

Sure. My son and I hunted with Jim in 2013 and he was extremely personable and patient with my son guiding him to a great tahr and a solid red stag. He is willing to hunt as hard as you want and also take the time to show you some beautiful parts of NZ. An all-around good guy and highly recommended!

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
