Greetings, members. I was referred to this site because I am in the early stages of planning my first hunt in Africa in June-August 2017. I am not yet certain what country to go to or species to shoot. My dreams include a lion, buffalo, kudu, sable, gemsbok and wildebeest. I don't think I will have the funds for a lion or sable on the first trip, but a buffalo would be a dream. I very much want a traditional "old style" african experience and want to see as much game as possible. Hearing a lion at night would be another dream. I want to hunt free range, if possible and not run into other groups of hunters. Any suggestions on location and outfitters to fit these requirements would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards, Mike

    Hi Michael,

so you are looking at - I very much want a traditional "old style" african experience and want to see as much game as possible.

And you are looking for Cape Buffalo, Kudu, Gemsbok and some type of Wildebeest.

    Look at Zambia and Namibia.

If you have the availability of funds look at Tanzania and Mozambique.

Congratulations! It was/is/etc the best & most fun experience. I went in 2014..... Starting shopping in probably 2000, committed in about 2012. Vetted probably 200 outfits.... Decided on Hartzview & Jacques Spamer. The planning is a blast. The trip is over the top awesome. I wish you the best! Holler if you ever have a question! Highest recommendation..... Going back in May 2016!

Hello Mike, welcome to AH. To hear lions roar at night, just makes your feeling of Africa come alive. I am hunting on 690 000 acres of free range, and you won't see another hunter. Because of the size of the area, sometimes it feels as though you not seeing much game, but they have the freedom of movement and you just need to find them. At night we have leopard walking through camp and even elephant at times. We don't get off vehicles and go walking around without a rifle over our shoulders, you just never know what you going to walk into. Our most common animal on the area is sable, fantastic hunt. If you need any advise, there are plenty of people on AH, that will help.

    Welcome Mike!
Lots of reports here to research, I have no idea how your going to get through them all... Fortunately you have a couple years!

Depending upon your budget, some very good advice offered already. I would not want to take away from those suggestions.

For some of the wilder areas, you will pay very high daily rates but potentially lower trophy fees, perhaps much lower. Be sure to analyze the over all cost... When I went to Zimbabwe, I was excited to add lots of PG to my DG hunt as the prices were very low. However the opportunities just were not given me to take them.

To see the most game, it is hard to beat the East Cape of South Africa.

For great buffalo hunting and still lots of game at somewhat reasonable cost, look into the Limpopo region of RSA, but stick to large properties. If you are willing to hunt in a fenced area but a very large one, I think a lower cost option that may come close to what your asking could be at Spear Safaris main camp right near Kruger. At least that was the best combination of great buffalo hunting for the cost I could come up with this year. Definitely great buffalo hunting with lots to hunt through. Very good kudu and blue wildebeest, you will see lots as well as many other species and will likely take them as opportunity presents itself while hunting buffalo. We not only heard but saw lions, however you should inquire as to that for the time period. I thought hearing a hyena roar was even more special! You will have great food, hunt in an old school open truck with a somewhat old school PH. With the right timing and request could probably be the only hunter in camp. Not an area for Gemsbok but great waterbuck and lots of zebra. And if you get your buffalo early enough you can move to another camp for other critters. Or just take a day or several to visit Kuger.

    Have fun planning!

welcome mike, you have a lot of choices and your hunt can be done in many different combos. I think you will find prices on some of your wish list to be up there. We have free range and fenced areas that would work for what you want. Have one large 50,000 acre area with buff and all the other animals you want but lion. With good planning you can get what you want at a fair price if you do your home work. If I can help with any info let me know.
    Thanks Billc
