What is the best way to keep your personal belongings safe while you are away from camp if there is not a safe available? Not sure I want to carry around my passport, cash etc while hunting everyday. Ideas suggestions?

    That's it.

Most outfitters will also have a safe place you could then lock the gun case, or you can many times lock the room.

If no safe, take them with you daily in your hunting pack on the truck with you

I take my passport with me in a pocket just in case. I put it in a Loksak in case I get soaked in a heavy rain or dunked. Maybe I am just overly paranoid but anything that would be a real pain if I lost, which is really only just a few things, goes with me.

okay thanks for the tips. will put my good locks on the gun case and take passport and some cash with me in my day pack. Any other suggestions? I understand that hard candy is all the rage in Africa is this correct and how do you pass it out? Bags or a few at a time? I have also been told that cigarettes and lighters are good to take along. Any advice on this?
    Thanks all

I have never done the candy-man deal at a village. Am certain none of my trackers would have been very impressed. A few hundred rand - you bet - candy or cigarettes - not so much.

Never had anything stolen in a camp but a good rule is 'thou shall not tempt.'

Gun case or ammo box should have a lock. Always kept all my cash and docs there. Not sure why you'd need a passport while hunting.

As for candy, feel free to share if you're eating, but in South Africa particularly, you're not in an especially poor country, unlike many others. Trackers, skinners, etc. may take candy if offered, but they will usually buy their own if they want it. Certainly they would appreciate cash rather than candy (inany country), so if you give out candy you may have to find a way of letting them know it's not in lieu of money.

Locked gun case for me as well. As far as candy, on both my trips I did take candy (not instead of money; in addition too) to Zimbabwe and Namibia. In Zimbabwe the candy was for the trackers (hunting buffalo) but I did take some good chocolates for the PH's wife (made him a big hero). Also my PH absolutely loved Reese's peanut butter cups so he got a big bag of those. In Namibia I took chocolates for the PH's wife and candy for their kids. It's not that they can't get candy but it is harder to find and with limited choices. I think both times it was very much appreciated. Certainly not mandatory but a very nice touch.

Unless you are on a fenced private ranch I'd never leave camp without my passport. Keep it in a ziploc or other waterproof case but I definitely would not let it get separated from my person.

As tightly controlled as guns and ammo are everywhere I know of in Africa every outfitter has some place to secure the firearms and that would do for the rest.

To be honest, I never gave it a thought when on my last trip. I would kind of assum my PH had reputable help & I trusted him and trusted him to deal with it if something happened...

I use my Pelican ammo Box which can be locked with a key. If it's lots of money/valuables prob should ask PH what to do. Also your gun Box will work as well. Other than my gun and binos I usually only have some tip money as afar as valuables go anyway.
A major concern so thanks for starting the thread!
    Regards,
    Philip

Reese's is one of my weaknesses!

Not long after I returned from my safari I got a request for a few things from my PH. I was happy to oblige, and sent some various candies for his two kids. He said it was a big hit with them
