One nice rifle under $15,000

I’d love to find a .425 WR or an 11.2x72
I hope you can find a good 425 WR . I think they are the best of the big medium calibres . I like them so much I’ve got 2 ! A very old original takedown with extended magazine 1912 vintage and a more modern scoped version with a flush magazine . Both best grade rifles . The older one has lived an exciting life . While the newer 70 year old rifle had never been shot until I got it 12 years ago . Great cartridge coupled with a great rifle maker . Good luck with your search .

I can’t remember where the new stock came from . I keep a lot of timber for various uses - not just rifles . The fiddle back is nothing special - I can easily reproduce from my saw milling equipment . Over here in Australia we just call it quarter cut . Take any plank , turn it on its side and cut length wise will give a fiddle back . All my English rifles have what many would consider plain timber . Not as flash as exhibition grade but far stronger . I recently selected a stock for my Shikari 500NE - I went with the plainest piece of timber that Rigby offered me . But it is still very nice .
Very interesting. Terry Wieland I believe spoke very highly of in particular Australian walnut for DG rifles. Key words were hardness and strength. I hope you post some pictures once you receive the 500NE Shikari.

Speaking of hardness, I commissioned a custom rifle some years ago and supplied the hardest and most straight grained walnut I could find. Strictly old school build with old school hand in letting of the action. Then I received this picture from the gun maker with the "complaint" that his hand tools wore out and did not bite properly..

Then about a month later i received this one, first layer of alcanet oil. Definitely worth the looong wait.

Beautiful rifle .

Beautiful rifle .
Thank you very much. I am very happy with it of course. Give an excellent gun maker with passion for old school techniques the right materials to work with and not too much spesifications, only be spesific about what the rifle will be used for and how,,magic might happen.

This is a great thread. I am right now going through the process of trying to decide between a Rigby HS and a parkwest Savanah. Main purpose is Africa PG and I think I want in 300 WM. I already have a Heym 88b in 375 and a model 70 in 416. My sticking point is color case metal of all things. I really like it and Rigby charges about $7600 for the upgrade.

If a bolt gun, I’d like to have a Hoffman 375 on a magnum Mauser.
A decent double such as a Manton or Lang in 470 could be found around $15K.
I’d really like to have a long bar Webley 470.

I know I am biased because I just picked up. But for under 15 grand it’s hard to beat the Dakota 76 Africans in a DG cartridge.

The question I always ask myself when making such a decision is whether I would still want the more expensive option after purchasing the less expensive option. If yes, then it would end up more expensive overall by purchasing the cheaper one first.

Or as my father would say: “I cant afford to buy cheap things.”

Parkwest for sure. I already have the 416 Rigby so I would go for the 22 trainer setup the same way with nice wood and case colors.
The one rifle I feel like I am missing is a .22 as described. Well, I am willing to skip the CCH. :-)

I still kinda want a Ruger 77 tang safety in 416 Ruger .I bought a 7 rem mag tang safety 77 just for that purpose .My dang gunsmith moved out of Alaska where my rifle is hate to ship it these days .I hope to find a good gunsmith up there again .I love the tang safety and strength of the Ruger 77 .I am waiting also on norma to make 416 ruger brass I cant stand hornady brass .

ADG makes 375 Ruger brass now if you don't need the correct headstamp, it's Lapua quality.

I’m guessing that wasnt under 15 K, which is the title of the thread.

Not even close :). I haven’t even touched it yet but I’m already in love.

That’s great! Congratulations and please be sure to share hunting reports from the field!

Rigby all the way. Chapuis for the double rifle

If you were going to purchase one nice rifle for $15,000 or less what would it be? Mine would probably be a Chapius 450/400NE double rifle.
DWM Mauser 98 in 375 H&H or 416 Rigby. New.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.
