One more firearm...or are you done?

  • I'm all set, not even looking.

  • Always looking but not buying.

  • Maybe just one more, but I'm on the fence.

  • Still looking for "The One" that has eluded me.

  • I keep a "rainy day" fund in case something pops up I want.

  • I like trying new firearms and cartridges.

  • Give me the latest and greatest.

  • I need to buy another vault.

I lie to myself every day…

I tell myself that I’m set.. I have every caliber and configuration I could ever need…

And then I see something I like.. and I immediately start justifying the purchase anyway I can lol

I made this post 12 days ago…

I’ve bought 2 guns since then lol…

NOW I have every caliber and configuration I could ever need…

Until I see the next thing I like.. :D :D :D

I found my holy grail rifle 9 years ago but I still look. It will take something pretty special to get me to buy, although I still trade to upgrade some other rifles in my collection.80% of my rifles are in calibers over 100 years old. I haven’t seen a new model in the last 25 years that piqued my interest. I still see some old world crafted that catch my eye. I abhor rifles with spray on finishes, barrels with no sights, and plastic stocks. Just an old hunters biases.
you seldom post anything I don't agree with....

I don't even have to ask what your holy grail was lol

Not much interest in more guns and have other pressing priorities for time and money. However, in the extremely unlikely chance of running across one in top shape, it’d be hard to ignore a ca 1750 Brown Bess at right price.

Was just thinking about this today. I think I'd like another .22 Hornet. I'm thinking of a Wierhauch this time, a model 66 or 66JM. Got big bores.
Might also be fun to hunt with my Uberti Model 1876 in .50/95 for a few plains game animals. The ballistics with smokeless are good enough for all plains game, if inside 200 meters.

Jim Kibler is currently working on a Bess kit, the model of 1752 or 54. I think? It will be just like his latest kits, as-in maybe 2 hours put together then finish metal and wood to your own taste. All done on CNC machinery. They will be BEAUTIFUL - as as beautiful as a Bess can be.

Only interested in old originals. The closest I have is an original M1816 Harper’s Ferry. Original Brown Bess guns in top, shootable condition are neither common nor cheap.

Hornets are tricky buggers. Sad that most makers can’t get the twist right. Lazy or ignorant or both. Many of the original Hornets had barrels with twist rates far too slow! Many current makers, IMO, simply look up the twist on an old chart listing original rates and set up their machines for too slow a twist rate. Why else would modern makers use a 14” or 16” twist for a relatively slow 22 caliber centerfire??? I’ve had several. The only one that came close to it’s accuracy potential was a very early TC Contender with the thin, 10” oct barrel with a 10” twist. Shot lights out!

My #1 recommendation for buying a Hornet… confirm twist before buying…. or not. If relatively slow twist, be prepared to rationalize and do all kinds of reloading gyrations trying to get it to shoot :) My accurate Hornet with 10” twist shot 50, 52 & 55gr bullets as well as or better than the so-called lighter, shorter Hornet bullets. The other Hornet rifles I’ve had would not shoot any bullet to good or even acceptable accuracy, even the much lighter and shorter, dedicated Hornet bullets.

I guess it depends on what you want to do with the Hornet. Both of my CZ 527's had 16" ROT's. They shot exceptionally well with lead tipped 50gr. and wonderfully with my field rat 40gr. HP's. 14.4gr. Lil'Gun powder, CCI or Fed small pistol primers. I'll let the 100 meter groups speak for themselves. RP brass only will hold that charge. WW brass has 1 full grain lower capacity.
40gr. HP's, Barnes and Sierra, went .105" and .165", both 3 shot groups. The 45calibres were just under .375", using both .224" and .223" bullets with a lighter 14.0gr. charge of Lil'Gun. The 40gr. HP's vel. was 3,340fps. Nosler 40gr. BT's I found, went 3,357fps with the same load and gave the same sub .2" accuracy. I used the same 500rounds of brass for 7,000 rounds. Never had to anneal nor trim to length.
I only partial FL sized, them, sizing only 1/4" of the neck's length and used a lee crimp die on the bullets that were only in the case 3 1/6".

I bought about 5 -6 hundred rounds at garage sale yesterday' for rifles and pistols I have, but a tupperware bowl full of loose 5.56 had 2 odd rounds mixed in , at home closer examination revealed they are 22-250 rounds. 22-250 a bigger case than 556. now I have 2 , 22-250 rounds and no rifle for them, what should I do, IM really perplexed what should I do, asking for advice.

#1 Give them to someone with a .22-250 so they can salvage the bullet but primarily the brass - or #2 - pull the bullets, dump the powder in the toilet and flush it and crush then throw the case and bullet away.
Or - keep them in case you buy a .22-250 later on.
Are they factory or handloads? If handloads, the first, second or third options.
Nothing to be perplexed or distressed about.
I've got ammo for a lot of rifle ctgs. I no longer have. Never know when one of those might come by.

Loads using sml. rifle primers and 45 and 40gr. Speer bullets, R-P brass and Lil'Gun powder in the second Hornet CZ.
The second picture is a WW case on the left with 13.5gr. LG and on the right, a nickle R-P case with 14gr. LG. These charges were just dumped in, not trickled in. Trickled, the RP case holds another .4gr. to the same height.

This is a fortuitous omen. Most definitely indicating you have a need to acquire a 22-250 post haste. One cannot allow those rounds to languish in a dark corner of the gun room. They must be given the opportunity to prove themselves in the field. And to show you my hearts in the right place and help you in that endeavor, here's a perfect compliment to a superb cartridge..

Only two rounds? Either give them to someone that has a .22-250, or the better choice of treating yourself to a new rifle in .22-250!

I had a #1S in .218Bee calibre for a while & used it on columbia ground squirrels, here in BC.
I did the normal accurizing tricks with it. Turning it into a tac driver, 1/4 to 3/8" at 100 meters. After 7,000rounds, it was still shooting bug holes on target, but a friend wanted it do away it went.
Just thought I'd mention the accuracy if "some" work is done on them.
Out of the box, many of them double group, ie: shoot 2 groups, an inch or more apart.
Just saying. Wonderfully strong actions.

Clearly this is a sign from above to go purchase a .22-250 rifle.
