Hmmm?
Cape buffalo is not on any endangered species list, and they put it on big 5 ban?
Recently I wrote somewhere on the forum, that "big 5" is obsolete term. Now it has backfired.

With President Trump in charge I am sure it will be over ruled. I am Ashamed for all NYers.

Trump has no ability to overrule a state law.

USFW does oversee interstate transport but I believe the state can be more strict. The state just can’t restrict products transiting though their state but if NY is the final destination they can be more strict than federal law. If it passes I believe it will stand.

Also note giraffe are included as well.

State is more strict. When I lived in NY they enacted a law to make mammoth ivory illegal to purchase. I use mammoth ivory for knife scales. Thank god I moved back to Florida.

Well of course they would do that. Mammoths are endangered. (Sarcasm for those without a sense of humor.)

How would that law impact any impacted animal that came in to Newark? I'll have to contact the trophy exporter handling my upcoming order of two dangerous game and several other big game trophies. There is a work-around. After initial initial wildlife/health inspection, the trophies are handled as regular freight.

Getting in and out of Newark isn’t the problem. If your final destination is in NY you’d have a problem. Possession is punishable by up to two years in prison.

Existing trophies are grandfathered but you have to register them and get a certificate of possession.

Pretty bad bill if it passes.

Same stupid shit logic the US airlines used to stop flying big 5 from Africa to the US.

Not surprised!!
We have lengthy background checks on ammunition, "permit" required to purchase ANY semi auto rifle (including rimfires), magazine restrictions and too many concealed carry restrictions to list along with insanely high taxes. Big government at its best.

I'm in CT, they passed a "big 6" law here in 2021, (giraffes, both rhinos, elephants, lions and leopards), as mentioned in the article, just before it passed, we were able to get a bit of a carveout added allowing for a permit from the Commissioner, (I will have to ask her if she is granting any). Previously owned trophies are allowed, but it's very similar to this NY Law. I must say, some of us fought this bill hard but got very little support, which is a pattern.

Friends of CT Sportsmen, a Non-Profit some of us started, has been working hard for Sunday Hunting and a Bear Season, (among other things) and the silence we get from the 45,000 CT hunting license holders is deafening. They'll bitch like crazy on Facebook, but they don't testify or write a check.

If anyone is involved in, or starts a Legal Challenge to this NY law, let me know, I'll gladly contribute. It appears that since in many states we are at such a disadvantage; Legislation isn't going to work, we'll have to resort to Litigation!

This similar bill has gone onto a NY Senate floor vote and passed before.

It has, however, died as the companion bill in the State Assembly at committee level in that same time frame.

For NY'ers, and I'm one, it will get bad if it ever passes at Assembly committee level and more importantly the third reading as that will put it up for vote in the Assembly floor. And I'm pretty sure it will pass as it will be lumped in with the budget votes this time of year.

Newark is in New Jersey.

Any imports at JFK that would be going on to different final destinations other then NY state wouldn't be effected either.
