New member in Zambia

Welcome to AH Ben. Glad that you found your way back to the hunting community. What kind of rifles did you purchase? What are you planning to hunt besides Cape Buffalo?

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

@Shootist43 I'll be hunting the regular stuff we can hunt here: impala, bush buck, warthog, puku, Lichtensteins hartebees etc. I'd really like to get a nice Waterbuck, I think it makes a great trophy. Zebra is tempting but I like to make biltong and didn't like the zebra biltong I've made in the past so much. And hippo, I would like to hunt a hippo.

Welcome Ben, where abouts are you based?

Hi Pete. I live in Lusaka. I've picked up that you and @spike.t live in Zambia, feel like we should know each other. Where are you based?

Hello

I'm Ben and I live in Zambia.

I've been reading and really enjoying this forum for a few months now so decided to introduce myself and contribute where I can. I also have some questions and will ask them in the appropriate sub forums.

I grew up here in Zambia and used to hunt quite regularly during my teens. Those days we used to hunt on "open area" licences. These days many of those open areas are no longer open to resident hunters, but last year I was invited by a friend to join him on a GMA hunt for which he had a licence. The bug bit me once again and I went out and bought myself a rifle or two (ok 3 and a shotgun) so this year I'll be applying for my own permit.

Do ask if there's anything you want to know and don't hesitate to get in touch should you need some inside information or logistical assistance on Zambia. It's a great country with fantastic hunting and general wildlife opportunities.

See you all in the forums.

Sounds great. I wish you well with your new rifles. May your barrels be hot.

I see I didn't fully answer your question.

I got a zkk600 30-06, bought second hand but pretty clean. I'm going to refinish the stock and add a recoil pad. This will be my main rifle and will be used for all plains game

At the same time I got a second hand CZ 22 hornet for bird hunting and for my kids to shoot. It's already accounted for a fair few guinea fowl

I also got a used Remington pump action 12gauge shot gun, again for game birds and to double up for home security (hope I NEVER have to use it for that)

Just a few months ago I grabbed a brand new CZ 550 in 416 Rigby, that I hope to use on Buffalo and Hippo later this year. This is a beautiful heavy weapon. I was concerned at first that recoil may be harsh but I actually love the feeling of that thing thumping up against my shoulder.

Hi Mike. Yes that is one of the two .416s that faizal had in his shop. Ross bought the other one. I know Ross and Greg quite well. Ross has been helping us out with the renovations at Pia Manzi and Greg just completed a successful leopard hunt there last week.

Enjoy Lusaka, if that's possible. I stay put of town when I can. Right now I can keep clear of the place as I'm building some houses on my plot out Leopards hill way.

Hi Ben... great to have you on this site. I agree with you regarding how great Zambia is for hunting.... AND fishing by the way!! I lived in Zambia for a number of years and had many successful GMA hunts..Molobizi/ Munyamadzi/Kafue flats etc. My 458 Win mag, both 375 H &H magnums and my 300 Win mag were bought while living in Zambia. I am now back in RSA... stay in touch, buddy.

@Bruce I'm glad you have find memories of Zambia. Looking at your pics you have taken some great trophies. I'm always interested to know the story behind a pic of two downed buff, as in your avatar.

@spike.t I've just finishes a stint working for the guys that own east park, my office was right next to the new Chicago's, it was looking pretty good pre opening. The guys that own East park are the new owners of Pia Manzi and also have Nkala at the moment.

that a coincidence as was in capones for short time last thursday and was talking to one of the owners, and he introduced me to a south african and was talking to him for a while. when they left i was told they were the owners of east park and had flown up to have a look at chicagos just before it opened.......so i presume it was them........

Ben,
This was a hunt in Tanzania.. I had 3 x buff on licence and 1 x was in the salt already. We got a herd early morning and the straggler bulls were a way behind the main herd, who had entered the tree line. We stalked up to 3 x bulls.. I shpot one and it went down.. the other 2 x bulls took off and ran in a circle BACK towards where we were standing. I was following them in my scope..when they came towards us ( not knowing we were there) I let the bigger one have a swift A frame in the chest..they both cam to a stop about 30m from us, still unawares. The shot bull was haunched over and blowing hot air out of his nostrils like a dragon ( the morning air was freezing cold). I now had a solid chambered and let him have it in the heart/ lung area.. they took off again and then the shot bull collapsed about 100m further on. This had taken about 15 seconds... MEANTIME, the PH is jumping up and down shouting that I had shot the wrong 2nd bull, thinking I was shooting again at the FIRST bull in error. I let him relax.. Mr PH, I have 3 x buff permits and I have now shot 3 x buff!!! He then clicked and was ecstatic, as we all were!!!

@Bruce what a cool story! The image of the hunched over bull doing the Dragon impression in the cold morning is a strong one.
