New Arrangement Transit Permits Germany

I have sent a request for information from my contacts, just in case this is an individual is ill informed.

ie. Importation vs transitting.

I'll let you know. I was considering going through Frankfurt.

Thanks @BRICKBURN . I was specific in the email I sent and said I was transiting Germany only between the US and South Africa.. and after 3 weeks of waiting to get a response out of them, I was fairly convinced this was a dead issue...

then the email came this morning...

keeping fingers crossed that this is just a poorly informed individual..

I could care less about the 20 euro fee and the 1 page application... I just dont want to get hung up in the airport for applying for a permit that it turns out I didnt need.. or for not applying for a permit that I did in fact need afterall..

The first time I found out about the permit the city just introduced it without notice. So, you never know.

I'll blast them with enough requests that I get to the front of the line. :)

Which airline are you flying with?

I bought my tickets through United (with miles.. that was really the only reason I chose United.. the tickets were "free"), but the flights are actually code shared. Im on a Lufthansa aircraft from Dallas to Frankfurt, and then on a South African Airways jet from Frankfurt to Johannesburg..

Sigh... looks like Germany has gone back to requiring a permit.... before seeing this thread I was told by a guy at a DSC meeting that he had to get a permit for Germany, so I sent an email to the airport in Frankfurt to ask..

It took them 3 weeks to reply.. but here is the message I got...

Dear Mr. West,

Hunters or people with weapons who pass Frankfurt airport have to apply a permit for the transport of their weapons. The permit includes outward and return trip via Frankfurt.

Attaced you find the application. Please fill out the attached application completely and make use of the technical terms for weapons and ammunition according to the german weapons law (Waffengesetz).

Also attaced you find a translation of the form. Please fill in the form without the translations.

Please list every weapon / ammuniton separate with serial no. and co. Please desist from filling in the form handwritten.

The fee for transfer licenses must be paid in advance. Proof of payment must be submitted with the application. The application cannot be processed without proof of payment.

For the permission you have to pay 20 € (twenty Euro) according to the § 50 of the german weapon law.

Please be so kind to send the money on the following account:

Send back to transfer@stadt-frankfurt.de

- weapon license from originating country

- proof of payment

Processing the application/s can take up to four weeks. If the documents submitted for the application

are not submitted completely or they are not filled in correctly, the application will be rejected. You will

be requested to submit the documents again completely. The processing period can then take longer

than 4 weeks.

Please do not send E-Mails as a reminder or call by telephone during the processing period. Please send

inquiries and applications via the E-Mail address transfer@stadt-frankfurt.de only.

Best regards

Julia Henecker
Thank you @mdwest! Could you please upload both the application and translation of the form for us to look at.

Like @BRICKBURN said perhaps just a custom officer in Germany who did not get the memo...

I also reach out to Lori @Travel Express.

the site wouldnt allow me to upload the microsoft word fillable version of the file.. but I converted to PDF and it looks like I can upload them in that format...

one thing I found interesting is they offered no instructions other than what I received in the email.. for example, they want you to provide the "Category" of the rifle on the permit application... but dont tell you what that means..

I had to google the weapons law referenced in the email and then run it through a translation application to figure out that Category C is a "single shot" (meaning anything that isnt a semi-auto), long gun with a rifled barrel...

Thanks.

That is the same old form I had been given.
It also notes in the form : "Bringing TO Germany".

I'm starting to lean toward importation. We'll see.

Very much hoping you are correct in your leanings :)

Thank you mdwest!

I have a feeling that if bags are checked through in Frankfurt and you don’t leave the airport that you won't need a permit... Let's see what @BRICKBURN or @Travel Express will get for confirmation.

I just got a reply a few minutes ago with the same letter from Julia that @mdwest did.

Sadly, without any elaboration. I am going to try and see if I can get an informative reply.

:E Horrified:

I also just replied to Julia with this quoted communication and asked for a response, not a form letter:

"Email that I received today from Sabrina Stock from Ordnungsamt Frankfurt am Main Transfer (Amt 32 email transfer@stadt-frankfurt.de)

Ladies and gentlemen,

Regarding the permits for travelling with weapons and ammunition there is a change in procedure.

No licence to take weapons or ammunition into or through Germany shall be required for weapons and ammunition taken on board ships or aircraft, kept in locked storage while within the territory of Germany, reported without delay to the competent supervisory authorities (customs) (including the manufacturer`s mark or trademark, caliber and serial number) and removed within one month from the territory of Germany.

This arrangement is valid immediately. Already applied and paid permit will be approved by me.

For the future you don’t need a permit for your hunters / shooters going to a hunting-trip / competition via Germany (travelling by airport Frankfurt), so that we won’t be working together frequently.

I hope this arrangement makes it easier for you J.

Nevertheless I would like to say THANK YOU for your cooperation and your friendliness!

Kind regards
Sabrina Stock

Crap! We fly from Calgary to Frankfurt on May 18th. Calgary - Frankfurt- Johannesburg- Windhoek. Please keep us up to date so we can get this bull crap figured out.

I'll let you know as soon as I get a reply.

I had to deal with this in 2013. At least this time they are providing a template in english.

BINGO:
The reply a few moments ago.

"Dear Mr. B,

i will confer with Sabrina Stock again in this situation.
We have a little disagreements at the moment with this topic (worse Luck!)

Before we make the people confuse, I will talk with Mrs. Stock and tell you how we will proceed!
I will write you again tomorrow!

Best regards
Julia Henecker"

I would not be too concerned even if they require the permit. They give worst case scenario timelines for approval.

I also await the reply.

Watching and listening

No reply at this point.
