End of day 3

Day 4 began with a another delicious breakfast in camp. Then it was off to canyonlands to see what was waking up down in the valleys. It didnt take long to spot a kudu. Unfortunately before we could get a good look at him he disappeared like a gray ghost to never be seen again. We spent a couple hours driving the rim and looking but never saw anything.

I totally forgot while eating breakfast Carel asked me " Have you ever kissed a tracker before" of course I looked at him like he was nuts. He then said today might be the day. As Billy had found my phone under Carels seat. The day before we had jumped out of the truck on a big warthog, unfortunately it only had one side of its tusks. In the hussle my phone must of fell under there.

We used the rest of the morning to drive around looking for tracks. We were really hoping to find the zebra herds on the property. So far they were winning this game of hide and seek. We checked water holes and sand roads. No luck. Eventually we decided it was time for lunch. We would take a rest and head out later.

Well, did you kiss the tracker? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Great report, and I'm enjoying all the pictures. Keep it coming.

After lunch we headed back out to see what the bush would deliver to us. As we were driving in the flat thickets above.the canyon a small herd of black wildebeest ran across the road. I was just thinking if we saw them that maybe we would see zebra with them, when we heard the trackers knock. The wildebeest ran across the road and to our right. But to our left the zebra had seen the truck and turned around and ran into the thick nasty bush. So Carel and I followed the landowners tracker after them. About 30 mins later we finally caught a glimpse of them but then lost them in the bush. We pushed on and the tracker even climbed trees hoping to.spot them. They had give us the slip. But we pushed on and eventually caught up to them. Finally we were in range for a shot. I squeezed the trigger of the 30-06 and with that we saw the zebra jump and appear to look hit hard. Both the PH and tracker said the shot looked good, until we walked up to the impact spot and found little blood. We continued on and could tell the blood was not a kill shot. As we were tracking it we could see our footprints from the day before when we pushed this giant block out. We eventually tracked it to a road it crossed. This gave us an opportunity to radio Billy to bring the truck to us for some refreshing cold water from the battery powered ice cooler in the truck. Then we continued the search. Eventually we caught up to.them. But now.daylight was fading so we made the call to.just try to get some more lead it. I went up on the sticks and aimed for a texas heart shot in the rear of the injured zebra running away from us. It continued to run. As it just crossed onto a road we were able to get one more shot into it and down it.went. I had decided this zebra woild make a great flat skin display for my daughter. It was just in the knick of time as the sun was setting on us. Looking at the zebra we could see I had shot low and injured the leg.

My first Hartmans zebra of the trip. 3rd animals taken of the trip. Can see the first shot was good on the left and right placement but way low on the up down placement. This female will be a flat skin for my daughter. That was a request before my trip.

We loaded the zebra up using the fancy winch and pulley system on the Landcruiser. In 2022 when I killed a Burchells Zebra in RSA I helped load a zebra with just a PH and Tracker. Im pretty sure this event caused me to get hernia surgery 4 months latter so the winch was welcomed. We made it back to camp for a well deserved backstrap dinner. I had requested the rice and broccoli. Im sure Carel was excited about rice . I dont think anyone in Africa eats rice as a choice, but maybe. Some small talk at the fire and it was another night we my head hit the pillow I was out.

Day 5 started with a beautiful sunrise but we could see the remains of the full moon in the sky still. Im sure the moon would be affecting our hunt somehow. On the agenda today would be any or all of the above animals a kudu, another zebra, big warthog, a baboon, and any jackals of course. Like the other days we started by looking in the valley in the canyon lands. It didnt take us long and we spotted a herd of zebra down in the bottom. We made a game plan. We would send one track down and use his wind to bump them towards the other canyon wall. We would be set up there and have a perfect downward shot on them. If it worked they shouldn't ever even know we are above ambushing them. Everything was working fine and they ran right to us but then stopped at about 500 yds. On a good day maybe we would try that shot but today the wind was whipping and blowing hard. Definitely not the conditions for long range shooting. Im sure the canyon walls would effect the wind in strange ways too. Eventually the zebra cut loose and ran parallel to us all the way out of the canyon and up into the flats where we had shoot the female the evening before. It was amazing to see just how fast and far they could run in seconds. It was magical in a way, like they had a elevator that was hidden because they made it out of the canyon so careless. We drove around until lunch time trying to find them. This property was so rocky it made tracking very difficult compared to some Namibia properties with the soft red sand dirt. We would go into town today for lunch. We were invited by the landowner to meet for lunch as he and his son would be taken whole truck loads of workers into town. It was friday and they were going to town for the weekend. Fridays in Africa are busy town days and this was not different. Outja was buzzing with people. I had to laugh when are 2 trackers sounded like young school boys on the back of the truck everytime we passed a young curvy African women walking.
