You read the headline correctly: Namibia took a giant step forward for hunters yesterday when the country’s
Ministry of Environment and Tourism said it will officially oppose any calls to restrict hunting and export wildlife products. Chalk one up for common sense as the Namibian government got around worldwide anti-hunting extremists seeking to stop hunters’ critical conservation efforts—and, in turn, destroy the economic benefits hunters provide.

According to All Africa, the cabinet voted to go on the record as a pro-hunting nation, opposing any and all hunting bans-and to campaign against any bans proposed in the future. Cabinet members were directed to promote the news through public forums and to “communicate at all possible opportunities its importance to national conservation and sustainable development programs.” So let’s help them spread the news!

The Namibian explains the decision is the result of anti-hunters’ opposition to the cabinet’s 2013 decision to sell five black rhino hunts for trophy hunting in efforts to help save the endangered species. You may recall that the rhino taken by American hunter Corey Knowlton in 2014 at a Dallas Safari Club event generated a whopping $350,000 for the species’ conservation. It also resulted in death threats for Knowlton and his family, though the rhino taken by Knowlton was an older, non-breeding male specifically selected because of its dangerous, aggressive behavior. The bull would have been culled regardless of Knowlton’s hunt in order to prevent injury or death to the rest of the herd.

In moving forward, the Namibian government is establishing a code of conduct for conservation hunting. It also announces its ongoing support of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism’s efforts to stop wildlife crimes.

Always great to see but this was published in March 2016. They have gone farther than this with the increase in poaching fines and jail time. I have been there and it is wonderful. I will be back.

Love this. Namibia is going to be my hunting destination for sure! Now if only they could get some sort of large hydraulic press to literally crush poachers...

This is great news, and anyone would be churlish to complain about it. Namibia is a great and welcoming place to hunt, without a doubt. Hunting Namibia is like hunting pheasant in Mitchell, SD. People are glad to see you, and they will do what they can to make your visit a pleasant one. In addition, this has to be one of the easiest places in Africa to import a firearm. What's not to like?

But . . . the government is still erratic in what it will allow, what it won't allow, when it will allow some things and when it won't allow others. Outfitters who have never had trouble getting permits for small animals find they can't get them anymore, with no explanation . . . it is illegal to hunt certain nocturnal animals at night . . . at least sometimes . . . etc.

If Namibia brought certainty to the administration of its hunting laws, it would cement its reputation as one of the best places on earth to hunt.

I absolutely love hunting in Namibia. But there seems to be something rotten there. My Ph was 99% sure he would get a leopard tag ( my tag). He did not get one this year and he was outraged. He told me some outfits received multiple tags when they should not have. He also said many outfits were up in arms over similar issues. I hope it all gets sorted out for the good of everyone. I am hoping we will get a tag for Mr. Spots in 2019.

Too bad it isn't true. Night hunting isn't banned, just not allowed. Same thing....

They are one of the best, don't get me wrong, but this is a political spin (and old news).

Royal, if you're running for office, you got my vote! Not banned, just not allowed!! I love it!
