My first Double Rifle - It's not Dangerous Game

Just picked up a 1984 Winchester Grand European XTR Double Rifle chambered in .270. I've never owned nor shot a double and I thought this would be a good place to start. Extremely clean. Complete factory case with key, original owners manual, and even a promotional Winchester knife. German style claw scope mounts with a period correct Bausch and Lomb Elite 3000 3-9x40. I am looking forward to taking this one to the range.

Sweet score! I, myself, just landed my first double rifle, very similar to yours only it’s a Chapuis in .30R Blaser. Havent gotten a chance to shoot it yet, but it is short, light, and very well balanced. Seems like they will be fun to shoot. We will have to compare experiences once they both get some range time!

I think so. From what I am reading it says that they should have been regulated at the factory for either 50 yards or 100 yards. I am guessing with the caliber being .270 - this rifle should be regulated at 100. But I will find out for sure at the range. Should be fun to shoot.

Yeah it’s pretty unique, a slice of walnut checkered like a steel buttplate. It has a few additions that seem to be out of the norm. Pretty sure it’s an upgraded model but can get ZERO information on it.

@migrabill how well do the ejectors work on yours? With snap caps, I’ve found I need to make sure the “range” is clear behind me when I pop it open Might be normal for an ejector gun, never shot one, so it was new for me when they went flying out at high speed!

That must be normal for them. Mine is in a 9.3x74r and they go flying.

As I stated, I have NO experience with doubles. I don't have snap caps for it. When I load rounds, and then simply break the rifle open (without firing them) they do NOT come flying out. I have to go in by hand and remove them. I suspect that will change if the rounds were spent of if I had snap caps.

Wasn't sure if you had been able to fire it yet. Interesting to hear the loaded rounds don't fly out, I haven't tried that yet, but I hope mine is the same- may be normal, which would make sense. I believe their ejectors are like shotguns with ejectors. The same thing happens if you open the action after firing the shells go flying, but it you open the action without firing the shells do not eject and sit a bit higher. I'm assuming to be able to be picked up by hand.

So I got snap caps today. They don't eject after firing either. They both "lift up" a tad so they can easily be retrieved with fingers but they do not eject.

So it has extractors not ejectors? Certainly no expert with these, this being my first. I thought from your picture it looked like ejectors. I don’t think it matters other than what the shooter is used to, but you will be far less likely to lose your brass if that’s the case. I have a feeling I’m going to be doing some searching after successful hunts

Perhaps. I can see why ejectors would be more essential on a dangerous game double where quick reloading and follow up shots may be paramount. If your hunting quarry with a .270, perhaps they figure ejectors aren’t as necessary so they give you extractors.
