Next the curve back needs attending to and again hot fingers require a number of dips in the water bucket.
IMG_20190916_152317.jpg

Finish shaping is done on the 2 inch mandrel I had made so it was time to replace the 80 grit paper
IMG_20190916_153100.jpg

I have this block clamped to the drill press table as it allows for 2 inches of wind up adjustment before I have to add another block under it but with a 6 inch tall mandrel it allows a reasonable ammount of sanding before the paper needs changing. I get quite a few bolster sets out of the paper for the horn bolsters but for the metal ones I still get three sets and it dosent take much to shange the paper. The spray adhesinve holds well and is reasnably simple to remove with thinners and a rag with a bit of a rub.
IMG_20190916_153619.jpg

With pins removed I have a set of bolsters ready to fix in place. These ones will be done wit brass pins to have my 3 dot mark subtly visible in the stainless bolster. Customers have made this request on a number of the curve backed bolstered knives when discussing upgrades

I had a road trip the other day and delivered the presentation knife and 1911 grip box sets along with another 8 knives so it was a pleasing day even if it was a long one with over a 1000 mile on the truck by the time I got home. Shane, the owner of the gunshop is ex military and has some interesting toys in store even though some of them are not for sale

Back in the shed this morning I got the hydrochloric acid heated and etched Henry's blade.
IMG_20190920_093946.jpg

With that taken care of the bolsters were pined and epoxied in place, which allowed the handle scales to be cut to a more convenient size
IMG_20190920_105625.jpg

The knife is placed on the scale and a scribe marks the top and botom of where the curve of the bolster ends are so the 2 inch curve can be marked in
IMG_20190920_105716.jpg

IMG_20190920_105745.jpg

The curve is cut on the bandsaw which is only a close aproximation of what it needs to be so there is some fitting to be done from here.

It is hard to get a good pic but with carefull touch and go on the grinder it comes in very close even if the shadows do not show it as close as it is.
IMG_20190920_110153.jpg

From here it is marked and draw filed "round the curve" by only taking noff the thickness of the pen mark at any one stroke.
IMG_20190920_110336.jpg

After a couple of "file and fits" it is exceptable with no gaps showing.
IMG_20190920_110537.jpg

This first scale is then used to mark the second scale and the process is repeated
IMG_20190920_110615.jpg

With both sides fitted one side can be clamped in the special jig I made for this purpose and the holes for the pins can be drilled.
IMG_20190920_111256.jpg
IMG_20190920_111356.jpg

The profile of the tang can be marked on the scale once the holes are drilled
IMG_20190920_111459.jpg

IMG_20190920_112156.jpg

It is now ready to be pined and epoxied in place.

Thia is Henry's Old Western knife with exhibition swamp kauri with carbon fiber pins over stainless bolster with brass 3 pin mark on the Fireball stainless damascus blade. Have the leatherwork to do yet but this wood is too nice for a simple picture to capture the marble like visual to it and even the video dose not capture the subtle colour and grain shifte.

@Von Gruff I really enjoy reading your thread ongoing. Great stuff.

I have a question, I know in addition to being a talented knifemaker, you're also a good stocker of Lee Speeds. Have you ever considered checkering a knife handle? Combining your two crafts could have stunning results!

I did try checkering but came to the conclusion that it is not something that I have the ability to do competantly and sold on the gear. I recognise there is some things that I am better off not doing rather than doing poorly. I have seen exceptional examples of checkering on knife handles and I know I simply could not get to that standard and anything less would be detrimental to the finished knife.

And this is going to be the giveaway this year with giraffe bone handles and titanium pins with 3 SS pins in the curve backed buff horn bolster on the 1095 blade. Notice for the giveaway will be co-ordinated with Jerome in due course for pre christmas delivery.

Von Gruff, I'll take one of those Safari Knives with a Giraffe Bone handle. That is providing you have enough bone left to make it.
Thank you Art and yes there is enough bone left for a few more handles. I will put one in the book for you.

18 sheaths cut out, belt loops sewn on, welts glued in then got them all dyed. They could then be glued together, edges sanded marked for stitching and the holes all drilled so they will all be ready for final stitching tomorrow to finish out the week. Hot waxing and blade sharpening next week so they are ready for shiping.

Leatherwork done bar the hot waxing. The few spare ones are for knives still on the bench.

A few more on the bench. The impala horn has given me a bit of difficulty trying to work out the best way to use it but bit the bullet on the horns today and made a start. cut what I expected to be able to use from the trophy horns a friend sent but had to get one handle from a spare horn that came with them so they were all of a similar size and shape. Because the horn has a gold tone to the base I decided to use a piece of NZ Rimu on the front of the handle to simulate this with a piece of ebony for the pomel cap. I will use pieces of wood to fill much of the void with epoxy to hold it all in place and pin the tang but this is going to be a slower build than usual but is for the sons of a very good friend and has been on the books for quite a while as we waited for the horn to arrive with the recent giraffe bone shipment.
Once cut to length I heated the horn in boiling water till it softened and clamped the ends flat against pegs I shaped for the purpose.
IMG_20191002_145423.jpg

All set now for some fitting of the various parts to eventually have something that resembles a knife for the young men.
IMG_20191003_143959.jpg

So from the three impala horn Light hunters there is a new skinner for me (I gave the last ones away) with copper and giraffe bone, a skinner with acacia for the farmer where I get my lambs, G/bone Safari knife, Hunter skinner with buffalo horn and a damascus hunter skinner with buff horn and macrocarpa.

Von Gruff, did you ever look into getting Red Stag antlers to be used for knife scales?
