    Hi guys.

This is my hunting knive „BUSHMAN”. The knive is made of steel D2, by Polish company
„Varms Knives”. It is small family company, making knives for hunters and for people who teach survival ( www.varms.pl ).

Had a very welcome email from my US agent with an order for a few blades but more exciting was the news that it looks like he has a reliable and ongoing source of giraffe bone for handle work so hope to have it on hand by the end of the year.
A number of these blade will have the giraffe bone with some horn as well. I decided to cut out a pair of chef blades as well while I was at it so I have them ready to go for when orders come in. They do not get the bevels ground in until after heat treating but al the others were ground and heat treated today as well. I am not doing any hand sanding before heat treating now with post heat treat clean-up done on the bet grinder with belts up to 600 grit before they go to the bench for hand sanding and handle work.

An AH EDC, 5 Light Hunters, 5 Safari knives and 2 chef blades

There was a thread recently (on another forum) asking about the knife members were using to slice the thanksgiving turkey and it got me to thinking that I didn't have a pattern for a carving knife so drew one up using my Grandmothers 80 year old (+) carver for inspiration. Yesterday I cut one out with its 8 inch blade of 12C27, profiled and heat treated it so it is ready for grinding in the bevels now.

    Grandmothers old carver

I changed the handle shape so it would or could be part of the chef set patterns I have

So this is the carver I have ready for further work

This EDC in 1084 has giraffe bone handles and is ready to ship off this week.

The carving knife I have added to my design stock. 8 inch bade of 1/8 12C27 with black paper micarta handles and stainless pins. Have bought a light tent so will be able to take better pics after it arrives. I used my grandmothers old carving knife for inspiration. It may be near 80 years old but it still carves very nicely indeed.

I'll bet that "Grannie" would have been very proud to put that new carver in her drawer. Some old tools are just simply hard to improve. Just to put things into perspective most of us have and cherish rifles that were designed and or built a hundred years ago.

Too right Art. Maybe not the full rifle but my 6.5x57 is on a 1916 action, 1901 for the 303 and 1898 for the 400 and they will undoubtably still be capable of active service in another 100 years or more.

Not only those old Military rifles but the Jefferys, Rigbys, Herrington Richardsons etc. Some of my Swedes are over 120 years old and still going strong. Actions and barrels, some I must admit are wearing new stocks.

Thanks Dr Ray I am loving my retirement hobby and very much enjoy the design process. I try to envisage almost all scenarios where the knife may be used and attempt to incorporate that into the design.

The chef knives that I HT the other day had their turn at the grinder to get the bevels ground in and there was such a dramatic reduction in weight between the one I had done and the one still to be ground that I decided to put them on the scales to see what weight reduction there was with the grinding. The unground one was 245gram and after grinding the weight was just 155 gram so there was 90 grams left in the bucket under the grinder or almost a 1/3 of its weight.

The other little chore that has kept me at the bench has been getting the rest of the blades handsanded and ready for handles allthough the material for them is not going to be here for a while yet so they will sit in the ready drawer til then.

Put some eucalyptus on the chef knife so it is away today to a new kitchen

Von Gruff, one of your knives would make a great Christmas present. Even if it is from Santa to Santa.:rolleyes:

I do know that someone is going to get a surprise with an unexpected arrival of a number of (non ordered) knives in their mailbox and it should be there before Christmas.

Santa made sure there would be something very nice in his own Christmas Stocking.

The knives from Von Gruff need no adornment at all as the carefully considered shape & style along with the beautiful workmanship are all that’s needed.

    Regards
    Russ
