Something was said in the 7mm Rem Mag thread that piqued my interest, specifically that mountain zebra aren't native to most of Namibia.

So I looked at a distribution map and sure enough see that the Hartmann is restricted to the mountains/hills that run parallel to the coast. Is the Khomas Highlands part of that area?

Interestingly, I learned of the existence of the Cape Mountain Zebra, followed in the next few sentences of its non-existence in that recent genetic testing has shown it and the Hartmann are actually the same.

The Cape Mountain Zebra occurs in the mountains/hills that parallel the south coast of RSA including on into the East Cape. Are they in huntable numbers? Is it legal to hunt them since they once almost went extinct? Do the many East Cape outfits offer them?

Yes you can hunt them. I saw quite a few on my last in in August while hunting there. On my hit list next time I’m in Africa wheather it be in SA or Namibia. Going to do a rug.

Touch base with Marius from @KMG Hunting Safaris thats who I hunted with . He can get you on one. I’m not sure though if they can be imported from SA. I know you can from Namibia.

When hunted free range in their native Namibian environment, the Hartman Zebra is one of Africa's great hunting experiences. They do indeed live in mountainous country (much of it volcanic and very rough), and have no difficulty moving to the top of it when pursued. They tend to bed during the day on high plateaus, feeding on the flats at night. Unlike the Burchtels I have seen, the Hartman seems to favor small family groups. The terrain no doubt dictates that behavior. Typically, tracker, hunter, and PH will have to really work to get a shot at a stallion. The picture below gives an idea of the Erongo Mountain environment where I took this big stallion with Nick Nolte.

Super fun hunt and I got to hunt two last trip to Namibia and I hope to go again this year.

I do remember reading something about rule changes for the one in SA but not sure were I saw it now. I think they can be taken back with proper paperwork now .The numbers of the cape mtn zebra have gone up and I am sure marius will know the new rules on them

They to me are a little nicer then a burchell zebra color wise and live in some nice country. I took a nice stallion and was very proud to have done that hunt.

It looks like I will be right in the middle of it when I go to the Khomas Highlands in May.

One of the toughest of all African game. The mountain zebra are absolutely fantastic animals!
The Cape Mountain Zebra were just reduced in concern due to the growth in numbers. I think they will be looking to allow hunting soon.

Zebra was my #1 animal on my first trip to SA. Mountain Zebra will be if I make it to Namibia this year.

Oh boy, you are whetting my appetite, dudders. It's Philip I will be hunting with in May.

What caliber did you use on that animal? You hit a few inches back -- did it go far after the shot? I hit my Burchell like that and it ran over a mile before dropping.

You can kind of see it in dudders picture and I took a picture just for the taxidermist to see also. P6280228.JPG Mtn zebra have a dewlap on them that really stands out sometimes. Here is a picture of mine same zebra I posted earlier.

In SA they want a hefty price for one. In Namibia where I took 2, they are cheap. One a rug the other a Ped.
Depending on your hit list, do not over look Namibia.
