Mosque shootings - New Zealand

Absolutely horrific.
+2

They've already started lambasting legitimate firearm owners in Oz - just because it was reported he had an Aussie gun license. Though this crime was committed in NZ - not Oz - the Aussie antis are all coming out of their sewers and jumping on the band wagon again!!

It will be interesting to hear how this nut case got his guns/ammo into NZ.

I am flying to Christchurch about a month from now to do a red stag and tahr hunt. In order to bring my rifle into NZ, I had to submit an online. Serial number of rifle, make, model, caliber, etc. Lots of personal info, plus gun permit info from home country. For US citizens, since we don't typically have gun permits, a current hunting license or gun club membership will do. I submitted all this about a month ago. A police officer emailed and asked me some addittional questions about gun safety while hunting. The key response they were looking for, that I did not list in my reply, was the gun will remained in a locked and secure place when not in use. So going through all this, I now have "conditional approval" to bring my bolt action rifle into NZ.

Upon arrival

Your visitor's licence and import permit will not be issued until you arrive in New Zealand (NZ). The NZ Police officer at your arrival airport must be satisfied that you meet the criteria of a “fit and proper person” before you are issued with the visitor licence.

If you have a connecting domestic flight, please allow sufficient time for your licence and permit to be processed.

Upon arrival, please proceed to the appropriate airport counter to present your firearms licence (or originals of equivalent documentation), and be prepared to answer questions about firearm safe practice (from the New Zealand Arms Code - NZ Police website http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/firearms-and-safety/arms-code ).

The fee for a NZ Visitors Licence is $25.00NZD – Cash only.

While in New Zealand

We have noted your firearm storage arrangements with Anthony Peter Chamberlain (R0207302) at 36c Princes Street Waikari, New Zealand 7420.

Please note that before acquiring or purchasing firearms in addition to those which you are importing, or disposing of the ones you have imported, you must obtain approval from a NZ Police District Arms Officer ( http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/firearms-and-safety/firearms-offices-and-contact-details )

If you do not provide an ID photo, the licence must be accompanied by your passport at all times while in New Zealand.

Upon Departure

When you exit New Zealand you will be required to account for all of the firearms you have imported, and report any which you have acquired while in New Zealand (and are taking them with you). Any permit to import firearms which accompanies your NZ licence will be subject to the condition that the firearms are to be re-exported when you leave New Zealand.

You must surrender your temporary licence and any permits to the airport police upon your departure.

You must take your firearm/s to the airport police station for checking out. Police will escort you to the airline check in.

A Super Rugby match between the Christchurch-based Crusaders and the Dunedin-based Highlanders has been canceled in the wake of the shootings at two mosques that killed 49 people.

New Zealand Rugby spokesman Nigel Cass said the decision to cancel Saturday's game in Dunedin was made after an urgent meeting involving both teams, venue management and police.

.............. both teams agreed to not proceed with the match as a mark of respect.

Crusaders chief executive Colin Mainsbridge says "yesterday's horrific attacks have left us all feeling stunned. All other issues and considerations pale in significance."

New Zealand's prime minister says the "primary perpetrator" in the mosque shootings was a licensed gun owner and legally acquired the five guns used in the shootings.

Jacinda Ardern said Saturday the country's national gun laws will change after at least 49 worshippers were shot dead in the two mosques in Christchurch.

She did not specify how the laws will be changed.

My heart goes out to all the stricken families!

I noticed I don't see all the anti Muslim chatter on Facebook. These political extremist post this stuff and a nut case acts on it. Facebook is full of extremist both left and right. I don't know what to do about it.

This is terrible that this happened. But honestly this happens a lot all over the world to other groups of people, who for political reasons don't get the same amount of coverage and public outcry. Where's the outrage and public outcry for, about the same amount of Christians killed in a single attack Nigeria 15 days ago. Just my opinion. Like i said this is a terrible thing this happened.

FB is actively screening anything to do with supportive comments for this criminal.

I have no doubt if that occurred in NZ you would see similar outcry. This isnt an us/them political spin thing. This is 49 unarmed, innocent family members dead on the ground in a first world country. I suspect the lack of coverage in Nigeria has more to do with the fact anything in Africa and India gets very little press.

Yeah a knock on your door by a couple of agents would probably get rid of a lot of extreme posts

Is the problem perhaps that there are no real leaders in politics? I am talking about those with charisma and the ability to draw people together. Those that can lead by their own strengths and characteristics without having to say bad stuff about their opponents.

In some respects i agree with you. But the impression of Nigeria as some third world destitute place i would argue is incorrect, its a modern player in Africa, larger economy than SA in fact the 20th largest economy in the world. So I would make no exception or discount that I "should expect that from a African country " argument im simply stating my opinion on the political situation which some would like to pretend doesn't exist or its not the time for. I would humbly disagree with.

Just to be clear. It's a tragedy. But im being bombarded right now with a media trying to tug at my heart strings for one set of people while at the same time out of the other side of their mouth. Silence about another.

And its just like the great hunter sestoppelman said. This bastard basically gets to retire now. 3 hots and a cot for the rest of his life.

It's all a perspective.
Local coverage immediately noted 18 Canadians died in the Ethiopia crash.
Little else besides a total.

African's were not impressed with the coverage of the "western media"
AP wire received a Backlash over biased foreign media coverage of Ethiopia crash.

"Soon on Sunday (March 7) after the crash Ethiopia Airlines crash in Bishoftu, the Associated Press, AP, came in for flak for seemingly prioritizing non-Africans in a tweet announcing that there were no survivors from the crash.

Many social media users called them out for being insensitive especially when Kenya for example suffered the highest casualty with 32 deaths. Most Twitter users slammed the AP for the tweet – it did not respond to any of the critical messages.

It wasn’t before long that Wall Street Journal was under fire for a print edition that said a plane had crashed in Africa.

Again people expressed disbelief at the notion that a news outfit as that will lump together over fifty countries into an incident. The headline ‘Jet Crash in Africa Kills 157,’ did not sit down well with many.

The Financial Times also intimated in an article that Ethiopian was known as Africa’s best carrier before the crash. Tweeps lashed out stressing that Ethiopia’s position as the continent’s best carrier remained intact despite the unfortunate incident of March 10.

It is not the first and most likely won’t be the last time that western media portals have attracted the ire of people over their choice of words and style of journalism in sensitive areas."

I agree with what you are saying about Africa and that the “norm” is that this stuff goes on there all the time so whats new. I feel the pain personally to an extent in that I was born in Kenya and spent my formative years there and more than 30 years in South Africa. Stuff that goes on in Africa does hit home, to me, just because it is Africa!

It does seem that what goes on there seems to pass the rest of the world by without any notice being taken!

The problem is possibly that the media is able to capitalise on the bad stuff going on in the 1st world countries, or possibly most people in the first world are able to identify better with 1st world tragedies, particularly those that have never been to Africa?

Familiarity does aid empathy.

At the end of the Day innocent blood spilt solves nothing! My religion does not advocate for violence against other religions, and any that do in my mind are ideologically flawed!
We will all answer for our sins some day. I am thankful that I am saved by grace not works, or doctrines! I am praying for the victims and their families!

Okay well the discussion I thought was about the shooting not an airplane crash and I was speaking generally about a bombardment of media so there's really no channel to change
