Hello everybody,

Next year will be my third safari to Africa. Whilst I have still lots more African countries and animals on my bucket list, I want to do a different hunt after that.

I am eying a possibility hunt in the Yucatan region of Mexico in 2027. A jungle hunt.

I am in contact with WTA. Did anyone of you hunt or booked a hunt with them. I know they are the agency and not the outfitter themselves but interested in people who have dealt with them and what your experiences were with them. Thanks in advance.

Here’s a report from a different member not too long ago.

Can’t help you with WTA but I gotta ask what you can hunt in the Yucatán?

Hello. I know WTA well and have booked numerous hunts for myself and others through them. Actually, they bought the hunt camps in Yucatan and run them internally now as a WTA operation. They are expanding and buying some hunt camps/operations in addition to booking hunts and their tag services. They have really improved the Yucatan camps, food, guides, etc. They have A/C now in the tents.

Turkeys are just part of the Yucatan experience. Coolest thing on the planet is their little brocket deer.

The only thing I have ever hunted for in the Yucatan is some shade and a cerveza, but I did know about the turkeys.

Good luck @DieJager , don’t forget your sunscreen. I swear their sun is worse than Africa’s.

Ocellated turkeys, Curassow, tinamou and more-bird hunting for big game hunters. Would love to hunt there someday

Nothing set in stone but I will try for a ocellated turkey, coati and a Lowland paca. Hopefully one of the brocket deer but that is going to be hard. Preferably the red brocket deer but I would take whatever the jungle would give. Maybe peccary. Lots of options.

Maybe some exotic birds but I'll have to talk to my taxidermist first if they handle dried, salted birds skins.

Yeah the rep told me so. I mailed Balam Outfitters and WTA responded and told me they bought the outfitter.

Are you happy with their service and did you hunt yourself in the Yucatan?

I'll talk to their rep later in the day to talk some things through. Any advice?

Ocellated turkey hunts in the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula . Very high success rates but not a guarantee. Fun hunt. Low stress and good food.

Try to visit the numerous ancient ruins in the area after your hunt. Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Every bird I brought back from Mexico was brought back frozen whole.

I have been very pleased with WTA on all fronts over the last 5+ years. I once had a guided hunt that was NOT meeting contractual responsibilities...I called the rep and he fixed it. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing even through some cancellations that I needed to make due to calendar conflicts.

I haven't been to Yucatan yet but it's getting more interesting as they get more brocket deer experience and success. They have also learned how to call the ocellated turkey, which is a newer development.

Yeah that is not an option since my bird has to go to Europe. Also they explicitly said that my taxidermist is ok to handle the birds dried and salted. But will ask what the options are. Thanks for responding.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Good to know. So far communication has been great but it is always nice to know people that have good or negative experiences.

Yeah I would hope to get a brocket deer.

If your taxidermist can’t or hasn’t handled salted skins-find one that can! Since you are still in the planning stages you have time to visit as many as you can locate and figure that part out.

That’s a great list. I got a coati here in AZ and can say it’s a very cool trophy. You’re making me want to look into this a bit more now. A jungle hunt would be a great adventure I would think.

That is what I will try to do. Normally I do not plan this much in advance but if I can shoot one of those nice birds I want them properly mounted.
