On 4 June, the U.S. government announced a series of major new restrictions for U.S. citizens traveling to Cuba, which take effect on 5 June. The two main changes include:

1. An end to group people-to-people educational travel.
This category of travel was the most common way that U.S. citizens were able to visit Cuba under previous regulations. Trips booked before 5 June would be allowed to proceed.

2. An end to all travel to Cuba for U.S. citizens on passenger or recreational vessels (including cruise ships and yachts) as well as on private or corporate aircraft.
Commercial flights from the U.S. will continue, since they can support other permitted categories of travel. The new regulation will reportedly affect approximately 800,000 bookings currently scheduled or underway with cruise ship companies. Carnival Corporation announced on 5 June that effective immediately, it would no longer operate cruises to Cuba due to the new restriction. Similarly, other cruise ship companies will reportedly re-route ships that had been planning to visit Cuba.

Though tourism to Cuba has not been formally permitted, U.S. citizens have been visiting the country under different permitted categories, including the group people-to-people educational travel category that is now banned beginning on 5 June.

On 17 April, President Donald Trump and his administration announced they would be imposing additional restrictions for U.S. citizens traveling to Cuba for non-family travel, though had not specified the details of the new restrictions until 4 June. U.S. officials have said Cuba continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere by assisting regimes in Venezuela and Nicaragua and the new restrictions are an effort to stop providing funds to the Cuban government and military.

The new restrictions under the Trump administration follow previous easing of restrictions for travel to Cuba under former President Barack Obama’s administration, which had permitted educational tours, commercial air travel and cruises for U.S. citizens. The U.S. became the second-largest source of travelers to Cuba following the easing of restrictions, with a majority of U.S. travelers coming to the island via cruise ship.

My wife visited last June by cruise ship...one day in Havana...a real eye opener...communism or socialism. Abject poverty and walk back to the 1950’s. Friendly people, happy for the tips.

Trump's putting the squeeze on socialist countries. Venezuela, Cuba, China, some of Europe. I wonder who's next.

How about he squeeze USFW to help legally harvested elephant lion rhino trophies. And least not forget Leopard trophies that are now on a case by case basis.

As far as I'm concerned Cuba can be totally isolated from contact with the US. Let them go back to their total communism with no contact. I'd like to see Trump put the squeeze on every socialist and communist country. That goes for NATO, the UN and most of Europe and the middle east who have their hands out and give nothing in return. It's way past time for them to start pulling their own weight and supporting themselves both defensively and economically.

Just when most Canadians were worried that Cuba was starting to get modern and with an influx of wealthy Americans, would be ruined.
Thanks Don. Nothing like keeping old enemies, enemies.
Seriously, what is the point? Cuba has been trying to find a way into capitalism, in a manner that is not disruptive and is compatable with their way of life. This is just Fat Don grandstanding by bullying the smallest kid on the block.

You make an excellent point. But why stop there? The US, Canada, and others give tons of aid to African counties "with their hands out". Impose travel restrictions on US citizens from traveling to anywhere in Africa. Instead go to Texas and hunt imported species there. Oh to heck with it! Just impose travel restrictions on the whole world! No one gets the benefit of American dollars. Everyone in the US is locked in. Want to see Italy? Go to the Belagio in Vegas. Want to visit China? Heck most cities have a China town. Want To hear French? Go to Louisiana. Get used to being locked in, having lost your freedom. Put up more walls... of course Russia would be exempt. We all know how Donny loves Putty, and would just love to put up a tower in Moscow... so Americans can learn to love borsch and vodka.
Poor folks such as myself with dual Canadian / American citizenship will just travel where we please, when we please. Now THAT is freedom.

Not Russia.
Putin isn't blaming the U.S. for it's troubles. Venezuela's leader and to a lesser extent Cuba are doing just that. Like my father used to say "You make your bed and you lie in it". Cuba made its bed a long time ago and they're still in it. If it wasn't for the cheap Canadian tourists subsidizing it over the years, it would have collapsed a long time ago.

As scuba divers, my wife & I had been waiting to see if we would be able to have a scuba vacation in Cyba before extreme Ferengi style capitalism got a majority hold there again. Looks like that simply won't come to pass. Similarly we've waited for years for things to "get better" to have a scuba vacation taking 1 week on a liveaboard diving vessel in the Red Sea, followed by crossing to a liveaboard boat (but not for scuba) traveling back up the Nile stopping at many historical ruins sites. That's just not going to happen in our lifetimes.

The entire rest of the world has normal relations with the Cuba. By your logic, it is impossible to not have your population in poverty unless the United States trades with you.

I'm not sure, but I think we are on the same side...

We feel less comfortable about taking such a trip each year that has passed Rick. Definitely a step change further down after the Arab Spring. My wife lived in Cairo as an elementary school girl who walked to & from the same Western school the children of the Shah of Iran were chauffeured to & from at that time.

My question should have read: "How about off the coast of Alexandria?"

Still not a consideration for us Rick even if the other hazard vectors were less. We've seen documentaries on diving there (Cleopatra's Ruins), and the underwater archaeologists had to wear contaminated water diving gear for hazardous environments due to the level of pollution in those waters; IIRC raw sewage plus industrial pollutants.

Hi Luke. Just saw your message. I am in Dillingham, and have been since 2002. I took an elementary teaching gig here, taught here five years, and then got a job with Togiak National Wildlife Refuge as their education and outreach specialist. Recently I just got a promotion and now I'm the Visitor Services Manager. Prior to DLG I spent 6 years teaching for Lake and Pen in Nondalton.

Hi TT
I am glad you found some useful info in my posts. Hard cast WFN with GC will do the job fine. I trust Veral Smith (owner of LBT company) - I believe that he can provide you with some finest HC bullets. Many companies are coping his design. I can help you from here in developing max loads (40.000psi) just let me know which powder you are using (I use Quick Load software which turns to be very reliable).
