Mauser M98- Has Anyone Purchased One Recently?

I bought a m98 magnum a couple years back and it has been with me to Africa a couple times and taken the big 5 except leopard plus plenty of others.
Having owned and shot several big caliber rifles I can easily say this is the smoothest action of any of them. The bolt slides like butter. The 5+1 capacity is incredible. I can’t say enough good things about it.

Expert, then. Still very high end, of course. Makes my own 7x57mm Mauser Churchill Gun Makers Model Deluxe (built on a 1943 military surplus DWM Mauser Oberndorf action) look like a barbarian’s gun.

I wonder if it is Expert. His appears to have Model 70 style safety.

I bought a commercial mauser98 a little over a year a year ago in 8x57. It has a 1/2 octagon 1/2round 24 “ barrel with solid full length rib. Took a deer with it using S&B 190 grain SPCE bullets rifle was proofed in 1938.

In 2023 I built a 404 Jeffery on Czech military 98 Mauser standard action.

It is indeed smooth cycling ... but not nearly as smooth as my 1903 Springfield 03A3. That pup is slick!

I definitely considered either a Mauser 98 Expert or Diplomat in 375 H&H or 416 Rigby. They were a couple thousand less than the Rigby Big Bore at least here in the U.S. While I understand the Rigby’s have better resale value, if one plans on just using the hell out of it with no plans to sell, I would’ve chosen the Mauser Expert or Diplomat over the Rigby and the cost savings would’ve been applied to optics and mounts.

I wish I fully grasped the attraction to the M98. I have had several, all work fine and feed fine. I have a couple now that were worked over and they are fine. I even bought one from Stuart Satterlee - all fine.
When it comes to simplicity, I prefer the Model 70 or the Parkwest/Dakota modified model 70/Mauser clone. Both have yet to cause a problem and work fine.

I am having a .416 Rigby build on a GMA action now, so will see how that works.

Plus, you do not get the endless varieties of Mausers - Mexican, Peruvian, Chilean, Argentine, Persian, Afghan, Czech and of course German. I really don't get the attraction to these other than nostalgia.

In 15 African trips, I have yet to have a PH using a Mauser action on his rifle. Most are model 70's or Rugers or doubles. I have had a couple with CZ BRNO's. Peter Flack, whom I hold in high esteem, used a CZ BRNO 602 in his rifles without issue.

At the end of it all, they all shoot. It is a preference issue for me. And pardon my ignorance on this issue as I see myself as fairly up to date on mechanical things (being an engineer).

Not liking a 98 but preferring "the Model 70 or Parkwest/Dakota modified 70/Mauser clone" over a Rigby requires a nuanced appreciation of action design that I do not have. But then, I am liberal arts major. :A Too Cool:

The difference in action design is not nuanced. Both Parkwest and Model 70 have 3-position side safeties and accompanying modified bolt shroud. A "pure" Mauser design utilizes the flag safety on the back end of the bolt shroud. A significant difference that should be apparent to anyone at a glance.

My late Grandfather's Waffenfabrik Oberndorff M98 in 7×57.
Given to him by my Great Grandfather.
He refused to use any other rifle his whole life.
We always used to joke about the hierarchy of the three most important things in his life namely his Mauser, Springer Spaniel and my Grandmother......in that order.

After reading the very different answers on the topic, my question about what is meant by Mauser M98 seems justified. Some people, one in particular, should consider their opinions before posting their comments on a post.

My mistake. I didn't think the Expert model came with Model 70 style safety. But it does.
Correct. I believe all of the rifles Mauser makes on their double square bridged actions are available or come standard with the 3-position Model 70-style safety. Same with the barreled actions they manufacture for Rigby. Essentially, if the rifle is designed to utilize the integral scope bases/rings, it gets the 3-position safety to allow same.

I can see where the question would appear vague just asking opinions of M98's, and do not think the OP was trying to waste anyone's time, effort or even annoy. To be fair, the OP did include reference to "recent" within his inquiry, granted that also came with the inherent vagueness in allowing interpretation or guess as to whether he meant a recent purchase of any M98 or purchase of a recently manufactured or current production M98.

I always try to read posts with an eye towards folks sharing their love, interest, or good faith search for information about firearms and/or hunting. And how, if possible, can I help or add to the conversation, and in return, I often learn as well.

Here, the initial response inquiring how recent, and reply of essentially ongoing, I think fairly helps clarify he was hoping to see photographs of Mauser's new rifles. Mauser is marketing the Das Original versions as being some kind of brand new rendition, but also seems to match those of the last several years, so I am unclear as well, but from the question I figured that is what he was looking to find more information about. If he wanted photos of older, vintage commercial, and/or mil-surp actions converted into customs, that seemed like a more labored interpretation.

End of the day, we all ask questions and hopefully give information with an eye towards sharing experience in these topics of shared interests. Hopefully not for purposes of creating or furthering argument. At times some questions can seem repetitive or even too vague to even ascertain what exactly is being asked, lord knows I have asked inartful questions at times as well. None of us are perfect, if we were, we would have no reason to be here let alone participate in a group forums.

Hope the OP finds some of the information helpful. Mauser should have several levels of their current manufacture M98's at SCI if making that show. There were also a number of the new M98's that the Fort Worth Cabelas got right after the Texas Trophy Hunters show...I kind of assumed it might have had some link to Mauser having a booth there and bringing rifles down to Texas for the event, but honestly also why one should not assume, could just be where they landed. They have since seemed to disperse, so might find one local to you to put hands on. There are a number of photos of each of those rifles on their website as well...thinking they have several of the 375's and one or more of the 300s.

Good luck and would also enjoy seeing some additional photos of Mauser's more recently manufactured M98's, say from 2015 forward. They really do seem to have made significant strides in their stock wood and finish. Given how deadnuts accurate my Rigby is, I have to expect that Mauser's full builds would prove the same.

I have owned a pre 64 model 70 winchester and while I did prefer their 3 position safety that was the only feature I preferred over the Mauser model 98 commercial rifles. The mausers just feel livelier in my hands than the model 70 and they also fit me better. I just wish I could find one in a 9.3x62. Now the workmanship there is no comparison.

I presume you are referring to my post....whatever...and I am happy with it ... :D Beers:

I see. So by your definition, anyone altering of the flag safety, which practically everyone other than an ostrich or giraffe must do to use their 98 actioned rifle with a scope, is no longer using model 98. I assume, the "Expert Model," like every other 98 so altered isn't actually a model 98?

Do please explain. Some new to the forum may not have read your other posts on such topics as dangerous game, wing shooting, skeet shooting, and politics and are likely confused.

Or maybe a Gerenuk ? :A Gathering:

Dang Joe, you forgot gunsmithing :E Rofl:

I bought a m98 in 7x57 about 4 years ago...can't remember exactly....always wanted a m98 but only in a proper mauser calibre...already had a 9.3x62 and also really had an itch for a 275/7x57....so the gunshop here I use are the mauser agent and when I was in saw one in the rack.....it sat in the rack for a long time due to aftermath of the Chinese virus....I looked at it every time I went in...then on here I read the price had jumped ...panic set in and I went to the shop and agreed terms...as owned by by an Indian who is very good like that....l totally loved it and more so after my first shots with it...I used it on a few animals here on takeri, from having to shoot snared animals to one's for meat and couple wounded by clients....it is a pleasure to shoot in this calibre....and is very effective..largest I have shot are 2 or 3 sable...worked fine...it tends to be the one that gets put in the cruiser when I am going out on the ranch....

And a rare photo of it with its scope in place...iron sights used most of the time...

Nice piece Mike

Did you need to have it re-reamed to accept 175 gr loads, as Bobby had to do with his Rigby Highland Stalker (reamed for 140 gr pills), or were Mauser smart enough to retain on their own version the original chamber dimensions?
