Ronelle Rademeyer - The Lufthansa group of airlines says it is ready to fly three times a week between Frankfurt and Hosea Kutako International Airport when the border reopens on 19 September as part of phase 5 of Namibia's Covid-19 restrictions.

Tickets are already selling like hot cakes, the group says.

Brussels Airlines is the airline that will use Lufthansa on the Windhoek route as part of its new business plan, which is based on the potential of the Namibian tourism market.

This emerges from a letter sent on 22 July to the Ministries of Works and Transport, State Enterprises, Finance, Environment, Forestry and Tourism, as well as the Namibian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Airports Company (NAC).

"In light of the measures to control the Covid-19 health impact in both countries, we believe the resumption of international flights between Namibia and Germany is possible and reasonable, provided Namibia moves to phase 5 and Germany suspends travel warnings and quarantine measures at the same time. .

"Against this background, our top management has approved three flights a week on the Frankfurt-Windhoek route on an ongoing basis," the letter reads.

It also appears that this is part of a new business plan aimed at recreational and tourism traffic to select destinations by this German airline group.

"In the future, Brussels Airlines, a full member of the Lufthansa group, will be the operating company in a sublease agreement with Eurowings."

Eurowings in partnership with Sun Express Germany, both also airlines in the Lufthansa group, have been flying between Germany and Namibia from 2017 to the restrictive measures.

Lufthansa says it relies on its good relations with the NCAA and is optimistic that the necessary regulatory procedures that will enable this new business model will proceed quickly and easily.

It further appears this international aviation giant believes there is a lot of potential in the revival of the tourism sector in Namibia.

"We have very good ticket sales to and from Windhoek and this supports our view that tourists are ready to rediscover your beautiful country," reads the letter.
