Man mauled to death by a lion outside Nairobi National Park
Today 7:50 am (8 hours ago)

By Capital FM, NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 10 – An escaped lion killed a man outside Nairobi National Park on Monday, sending panic to residents living around the park after wildlife authorities warned the big cat was still on the loose.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said it had launched a search operation to locate and sedate the lion on Monday night.
“We are reaching out to the family of the deceased with a view to visiting and consoling with them. KWS urges members of the public to stay calm and not to venture out at night until the lion is captured,” KWS said in a statement to reporters late Monday.

The incident occurred outside the park’s southern periphery, KWS said. The park is ringed by electric fencing in parts but is not entirely sealed off, enabling traditional migration by game in search of grazing.

Endangered wildlife including lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalos graze in the iconic park against a backdrop of distant skyscrapers. ( yel·low jour·nal·ism: noun: journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.)

The park is just seven kilometres (four miles) from the heart of Nairobi, and incidents of animals escaping the grassy plains and wandering into the chaotic metropolis of more than four million are not unheard of.

In March 2016 a lion was shot dead after it slipped from the park and attacked and injured a man. It was the fourth time that year that lions had roamed outside the reserve.

A month earlier, in February 2016, two lions spent a day wandering through Kibera, a densely packed city slum, before returning to the park.

The big cats are under growing pressure as one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities expands into ancient migration and hunting grounds.

Conservationists say lions lived there before people in the area and are not “escaping” the park nor “straying” into human settlements, rather people have moved into the lions’ habitat. (Humans seen as an Invasive species?)

WOW don’t know how I missed this!

Seriously, Am I missing something here?

Nairobi is expanding south, toward a long established wildlife "park": that has a migration lane so as to allow wildlife to migrate as "they" have done for eons.

And this is not the first incident, and most likely not the last, as the city expands towards the park.

There's train tracks, build a house on the train tracks, train runs through house,....and it's the train's fault??.. ..dah?...so kill the train....dah?

Why doesn't Nairobi just expand north, east, and west?

Sedating the lion after getting a taste for humans isn't really an option when there is a mass of "food" close by.

If there is a sustainable amount of free ranging lions; why not allow quato hunts on lions/lioness'?

Even better for Kenya's economy, put pressure on countries, ie the US & UK, to allow the import of lion trophies.

Is this to logical?

It is Kenya. You are not supposed to kill a wild animal.....

It is Kenya. You are not supposed to kill a wild animal.....

Ok, oxymoron moment: Kenyan government and logic:

So in Kenya wild animals are not supposed to be killed.

Yet villagers and poachers are killing wild animals for their respective reasons, and the government isn't making any financial gain(?).

Would it not be better for all concerned to allow at minimum quota hunts?

Kenya would be gaining a financial windfall(!): Through hunters & Hunting:

Stimulate economic growth
Stimulate the job market
Work with conservation efforts to maintain healthy animal populations to sustainable habitat.
Through legal hunting, financial and physical deterrent efforts against poaching and poachers, and the illegal trade and export of the whole or in parts of animals/wildlife.

Am I missing a downside to this??

We can wag our fingers at Kenyan government's mis-management of wildlife...But we best point those fingers at ourselves!:
Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott’s father is facing a slew of serious charges after his illegally owned serval cat got loose and attacked a dog.

This week, the Ohio Department of Agriculture announced that Stacy Elliott – also known as Stacy El-Muhammad – will be charged with 21 different counts stemming from an October incident when his serval cat was shot and killed after attacking a dog.

According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, investigators spoke with Elliott, who claimed he was keeping the serval, but wasn’t the owner. Investigators said they were able to use the animal’s microchip to trace its ownership, determining it had been sold to Elliott, who does not hold the required permit to own a serval in Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture filed nine charges against Elliott:

• Failure to notify of dangerous wild animal (DWA) escape
• Falsification
• Obstruction of official business
• Allowing DWA to escape
• Failure to notify law enforcement of DWA escape
• Failure to have DWA signage at property entrance
• Possession of a DWA
• Failure to obtain DWA permit
• Failure to have DWA signage on cage

Of those charges, eight are first-degree misdemeanors. In Ohio, a first-degree misdemanor carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, WCMH reports.
