Lion mauls Vic Falls woman
January 10, 2016 in Community News, Local, News

A PRIDE of lions is wreaking havoc in Victoria Falls with one of the wild cats yesterday mauling to death a 52- year-old woman before feeding on her corpse, The Standard has established.

By Nokuthaba Dlamini

Officer commanding police in Victoria Falls Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona confirmed the killing of Sarah Tshuma by one of the lions which has since been shot dead.

“We confirm having received such a report of a woman who was killed by a lion early today (yesterday) and our most sincere condolences go to the family and friends,” Chiwona said

The attack took place at Sisonke Village in Woodlands area under Chief Mvuthu.

Violet Ngwenya, a neighbour and relative of the deceased said the lions had been causing sleepless nights to villagers for the past few days.

She said villagers were now sleeping outside their cattle kraals to safeguard livestock.

Ngwenya said the lions initially attacked a cattle kraal around 7pm on Friday at the same homestead killing one ox.

“Villagers scared away the pride after the incident by banging empty containers and making fire in an effort to safeguard cattle and goats but the lions kept coming,” she said.

“Eventually we all agreed to go and sleep because it was already midnight but Tshuma refused indicating that she wanted to watch over her beasts and we left her.

“Around morning, one of the lionesses came back again and we suspect it charged on her as she was patrolling outside the kraal because we were awakened by her screams pleading for help.”

Ngwenya added: “We helplessly saw her being attacked but we couldn’t do anything.

“We contacted police and Parks (Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority), but it was too late because immediately the lioness started feeding on her.

“It ripped open her stomach and other body parts until it was shot by Parks rangers.”

Tendai Musasa, chairman of Woodlands Wildlife Conservancy said Woodlands Farm had a long history of human-animal conflict.

He said a number of people had been attacked and injured by wild animals while others had been killed.

“Last year in February during President Robert Mugabe’s 91st birthday party, we shot and killed one elephant which was a threat to the villagers as it would destroy crops in the fields,” Musasa said.

“They tried to chase it away, but it would charge at them.

“People never reaped anything in their fields because of the elephant and I saw it fit for rangers to gun it down even though it steered anger from conservationists, branding the pledge of the meat to the president as unethical.”

In the same area, another villager, Given Ndlovu last year survived death by a whisker when he was attacked by a buffalo that left his intestines protruding.

I'm sure they will think that the native women provoked the Lion in some way, or she deserved what she got for keeping her livestock confined in a Pen

The anti's just don't care. Save the animals at any cost is their motto. They have no answers and refuse to listen to hunters, wildlife organizations, and biologists. Facts based on emotion. Great way to go thru life isn't it????

It's a tough life to raise cattle around Lions.

Keep watch, there should be some poison being spread shortly.

This predation will not hit the news.
Out of sight, out of mind.

Hell a death is even headlined as a "mauling"!

If you care, In the future i can PM you the entire new paper for your review and then you can post what you like on Facebook...

The anti folks will say this happened because there are just too many people living near the lion habitat! It was the humans fault for not letting them eat the cattle.

The thought occurred to me today:
How many of these keyboard warriors have a Grizzly Bear or Mountain Lion attempting to kill them when they are wandering the Grocery aisles or when they are sitting at their key boards?!

They are safe because the dangerous stuff has been Killed and no longer lives anywhere near them.

Save the Bears and Cougars, deport an Anti to create space.

i also had that picture, however i decided not to post it with the article...

I figured, no sense not posting it. It is the REALITY of living in rural Africa. These bloody things are not behind bars in a Zoo and the Lions will kill a human in a minute.

I don't see any Anti's running over there to protect the villagers.

How desperate do you have to be to confront a Lion in the dark unarmed?

Just saw this thread and your post. In class today that was a question that was asked.
1. How many of you would like to see a lion? 24 hands went up
2. How many of you would like to see a lion in your front yard? No hands went up

Shocking. NOT.

I had a hunter education class years ago that was asked to share their fears.
Standard North American stuff came up and one last fellow who had lived in one of those grass huts said he was afraid of Elephants. The rest of the class laughed like it was silly.
Totem it was. Zoo's don't tend to be very dangerous.

I then asked the student, an adult, to share his experiences that created this fear of Elephants.
Somehow, having your home crushed by an angry Elephant started to rate right up there with things you should be scared of.

I still remember my first time seeing a whitetail doe in the crook of a tree 7 feet up. The realization you are not the top predator around is chilling. Oh by the way, our fish and wildlife still denied that mountain lions existed in Okla. (At that time) I don't want to walk out my door and be greeted by one. I can't imagine having to protect my family or property unarmed at night from lions. So sad the loss of life.
