The Lowveld of Mpumalanga, with the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve at its core, is perceived as one the best in the world for hunting dangerous game.
The reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park, with no fences that separate the reserve from the Kruger National Park itself so that animals roam freely between several reserves.
The larger open wildlife system spans 6 million acres and is home to a wide range of antelope species, enormous herds of hippos, buffalo, elephant, prides of lions, and rhinos.
The reserve is dedicated to conservation, but limited, sustainable hunting contributes to its management budget and rhino protection.
The pursuit of hippos can be an extremely challenging endeavour. Because they spend the most of their time in the water, it is typically difficult to identify the bulls when they are sought for trophies. The head of the bull will be slightly larger than the head of the cow, and he will have two humps that are not particularly apparent on either side of his snout.
While shooting hippos, you should by all means use a sufficiently large rifle, and when hunting hippos in the water, as indicated, the placement of your shots needs to be absolutely precise.
Hunting hippo in the Timbavati is a unique and high-priced hunting opportunity, because hunting permits are limited to just a certain number annually.
