Left Hand A-Bolt .375 H&H

@Firebird - interested in “why” a 26” barrel for only a .375 H&H and thought the standard for that cartraige was 24” — with 24” perfect to obtain maximum velocity and better accuracy with shorter “stiffer” barrel vs 26”. I also thought (and Not sure about this) that only certain magnums perform “faster” with the 26” barrel (375 H&H Not one of them) but that the trade off was slightly less accuracy due to longer barrel not as stiff? I know my personal preference is to have only as long a barrel as “needed” and 22” to 24” is all I would want to carry unless there was a significant ballistic or accuracy advantage to carry longer.

Dr. Robinson (doctari) clients complained bitterly of the recoil in the lightweight Browning A-Bolt 375 H&H so he loaded it down. Low and behold it killed better on Cape Buffalo. There is Fluid Dynamics involved in the energy transfer.

@Bonefish2150 - while I am not any type of ballistic expert (don’t even reload) I don’t agree that a “.375 H&H Should have a 21” barrel” and while the shorter barrel “might” be a slight advantage when dealing with a ‘charge’ in Very tight cover why compromise what the .375 H&H can do in normal circumstances (99.9% of what it will be involved in). Browning ABolts are often lighter then other rifles = more recoil etc…that’s the price anyone pays shooting a lighter then normal rifle. A-Bolts are also Push Feed & magazine (Not floor plates) so many would already eliminate them for DG hunting…I love the ABolts and their magazines Snaps in very securely + the short rotation bolt throw cycles very fast ! Regarding a 21” barreled .375 “loaded down”——“Lo & behold it killed Better on Cape Buffalo” - what is that based on? (One person? A few Buffalo killed w/21” barrels?). There just can’t be much data or studies (or even common events) that led to that conclusion? While it could be true — Haven’t the vast majority of Cape Buffalo killed with a .375 H&H (there must be 1000s) been with standard barrel lengths (24”)? Anyway, no argument that a 21” barrel even loaded down to a slower velocity will Kill Cape Buffalo and if that is the set up that a Hunter has confidence in — personal choice. It might not be My choice but that doesn’t mean it can’t work well.

I have been shooting a 26 inch barrel .375 for the last 35 years. I have had zero problems with it even in heavy brush and it gets the most out of the cartridge in terms of velocity. I would not know what to do with a shorter barrel. Personal preference.

@375er - If you are getting significant additional velocity or better accuracy from a 26” barrel I think that is a FACT based reason (PLUS your personal preference) to use a 26” barrel. I thought, perhaps mistakenly, that 24” usually obtains the optimal performance from most ammo in a .375 H&H. Agree it is likely always personal pref

I am confident out to 300 yards and the accuracy is nothing to sneeze at. Accurate rifles are interesting.

I'd thought back on this rifle a number of times wishing I would have kept it, but I sold it as I was buying my 550. The CB Edition stock for the 550 has erased the sellers remorse. Amazing what a little less wood can do. Now to add a barrel band, chop to 20", thread, and bed.
