I fly Delta a lot Asia, China and recently you fill out the landing card in the app before getting you boarding pass.
Delta is one pushing you to do it. I just checked the box I had completed it. I did not do one. It is still not required as of now. No one asked a thing about it anytime. Not mentioned on flight or at JNB. I used Africa Sky for SAPS rifle permits and meet greet so not have hassle with the long line. 10min from deplane to baggage carousel. Hold up was bags. This new thing with checked bags with ammo being diverted to SAPS pick up point. I highly suggest use the meet and greet when coming off the plane to get your luggage and through the customs way faster and easier. Thanks for the heads up Mark. Good luck to you on the hunt!
I'm going over end of this month and saw something potentially new in the Delta app. Are they now doing the Declaration sheet online for SARS (not SAPS)? We always filled out one handed out during the flight but it said starting June 1, it will be completed online? Did recent travelers fill that out on paper per usual or online?
Thanks Mark. Very helpful to hear the recent experience. We are also scheduled with Gilbert and Africa Sky and this time, a group is with me.Delta is one pushing you to do it. Thank you for this update! I hope you have a successful safari!!Update to this thread:
Just arrived in JNB on DL 200 and nobody cared about our 3 checked bags with ammo. Picked up the bags after clearance like always and just went to SAPS where they only care about serial numbers. Interesting
Hey aren't you supposed to be hunting? No telling. All depends on mood at time and where originally checked in from I guess.
Thanks Mark!I arrived last night on DL200 to JNB.
Couple new twists since last time thru and thought would share.
I was VIP greet thru Africa Sky.
Met like usual. It when got to customs/immigration. There is a new special line for just all those issuing a greet service. Took about 10min in that line.
Now the new twist. Checked luggage with NO ammo in it comes out on conveyor carousel like always. Bags with ammo are sent to Police Station along with guns. It’s still in a new sorting and little crazy. Delta and United flights all the guys bags with ammo went that way. Meet greet guy showed me the code that’s put on bag tag in USA saying it has ammo in it. I did notice my bag with ammo went on a different conveyor in Houston. And my AirTags showed it always stay pretty close to the rifle case as it was moved along in Houston and Atlanta. Just a new twist guys.
It could be simply a continuance of inconsistency in the “rules” for air travel.I was there three weeks ago and none of this happened to me. I clearly indicated I had ammo in my checked luggage upon check-in at the Delta counter in the US. Could this new regulation be as of June 1st??
It would actually be more convenient for us. We typically see our guns getting carted by the carousel while waiting for bags so I guess we just keep our head on a swivel and watch for bags heading that way as well! All I know is what the Meet Greet guys and Gilbert said. This just started a week or so ago. The guys said everyone on the Delta flight and the earlier United flight. Bags with ammo go to SAPS for pick up or where the SAPS pick up guns by carousel 4. I hit mine there. Had show claim ticket. Some of the other guys got theirs in the police station.
Just wanted to pass this along for anyone coming over in the future if your bag with your ammo didn’t show up all that carousel where you might find it
